greek visibility on your campus

today we had our club fair (always the first week of the semester)and i was hyped! the greeks took up a good row of tables (the closest we will have to "greek row"). this was the one day you will be bombarded with letters on our campus--otherwise, theyre not around. (unless u live in 3rd north, which is primarily the 'greek' dorm)

props to AST for pretty much dominating advertising (i seriously got about 5 fliers on different occasions!) as well as dphie. shouts to theta phi beta (i think our only local) as well.

heres the (+):
  • hermanidad SIA (im feelin ya on campus, but i dont really know ya! u must have more events)
  • phiota (do all phi iota alpha chapters go by phiota?) on campus (one of my crushes is a phiota-this was b4 he went greek)

here's the (-):
  • no NPHC's! i mean whats really good?
  • barely visible on campus, and that upsets me

any1 else have this issue? do certain campus' greek orgs prefer to be low profile or is it jus the school atmosphere?

(and ive already looked up the previous threads on greek visibility and decline of GLOs on campus, so dont link them--i read them)

It definitely depends on the campus.

I think at big state universities, particularly in the BCS conferences, Greeks are always visible. Be it from actual Greek Rows, big houses, sheer numbers or the high level of involvement. Here at Nebraska, you better be Greek if you want to be Student Body President, or you have to be so involved that greeks know you from a lot of various things.

Here are some ideas that I think can help raise your profile.
  • Get Involved! My chapter requires our pledges to get involved in two non-greek organizations, whether it's a campus ministry or student government, they have to have 2 or they don't initiate. That automatically gets them started and for some (like me when I was a freshman) it causes them to get really involved. That gets the greeks names out there, and shows the campus that you are serving the university.
  • Organize days in which all greeks wear their letters. Make it once a week, once a month, something regular so you can see whose out there
  • Start a chapter of Order of Omega and really make it an honor to get into, recognition can inspire a lot of people to work hard.
  • Make sure your chapters are showing up in letters at major campus events...football games, new student convocations, Intramurals (make sure you practice great sportsmanship), anything that a lot of people will be at.
  • Make sure all chapters support each other...particularly when their doing something good like a philanthropy. Here whenever a house as a "food" philanthropy, 85% of the people who show up are greek. Sports tournament philanthropy events are usually 100% Greek
  • Publicize the stuff you are doing. Get the campus paper, and the local paper/tv to send out reporters to show the awesome stuff you guys are doing.

i dont really know if the student clubs here are dominated by greeks, but i seriously doubt it. the only thing greeks and student club members have is their excitement to be a part of something. i dont know if they intertwine at all. nor do i think its a requirement for the orgs to be involved on campus (and if they are, i dont know about it.

and honestly, the majority of the campus could give 2 craps about greek life. thats sad, IMO.

pshaw! as i said, the greeks only come out (as it seems) on club fairs. i have never seen anything (a flyer, event, etc) pertaining to greek life on campus. here, you have to really look for it.
