Post Golfing Incident

I'm not usually one to spread bad publicity, but this article from the University of Illinois on-line newspaper ticked me off. It makes me ashamed to be a former member of this Greek system when they pull shenanigans like this.

Red face

I'm embarrassed too. That reeks of the old days when alcohol consumption was practically expected of frat members and I hope the men who acted up are found and fried.

By the way, does golf bring out the worst in some people? We have lived next to a golf course for 21 years and frequently have to shield our kids from some golfers' shocking obscenities and others urinating in the narrow strip of woods that separates us from the course. Our neighbor had to put up a fence because players would come through the woods way into his yard and drink from his hose! Others would cut through his yard with their bags to try to sneak onto the course free!

I went "real" golfing for the first time in my life a few weeks ago and all anyone did was drink, including the high officials of the company. It was totally lame! I think unless you had a bunch of people who were good golfers and really interested in actually playing, this would be a terrible choice for a sorority/fraternity event. I have no idea what Gamma Phi was thinking. It sounds like socializing, disguised as philanthropy.

Brothers and Sisters,

This is more than embarassing.

This kind of incident sets relations between the Greek community and the host university back years. It tends to erase all the good feelings which are built over long periods of time.

When you read something like this, it is easy to understand why administrations become anti-Greek and, at the very least, want to embrace Select 2000 and/or other substance free initiatives.

It doesn't do a bit of good to point out that this was, "a few bad apples." The damage is done.

Fraternally,
DeltAlum
