I've never seen anyone ask for an ID for a hotel room in NY. Only a credit card. However, the "brand name" hotels are pretty pricey. Depends on where you want to stay and how much you want to spend.
Try Hotels.com and see if anything looks good. I found a place at about 51st. between 6th and 7th (theatre district) for about $100 per night last June. Saw three shows within two blocks of the hotel. A little seedy and the rooms were tiny, but clean. Free Continental Breakfast. Last time I stayed at the Sheraton Manhattan the corporate rate was $275 per night. I've seen the NY Hilton as low as $150 per night.
Some of the older hotels have been remodeled and don't cost as much as the Hilton, Sheraton, Marriott, etc.
Locations is important, though, to cut down on the cab fares. Manhattan (assuming you're going there) is a great place to walk.
