I love the Sphinx. Here is Los Angeles it's not too hard to find stuff with the Sphinx on it so we always have something with the symbol on it, although it can sometimes be pricey.

Now my chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma uses the butterfly as our mascot. There are reasons behind it, but I'm also glad we chose it also because it is easy to get tons of butterfly stuff to give as gifts within the chapter.

Here's the history behind Alpha Gamma Delta's Skiouros. (Skiouros is the Greek word for squirrel.)

The mascot was chosen by Gamma Chapter in 1915 with this explanation: "In the days when Gamma first made the triple colors of red, buff, and green her own, some of her energetic number sought a mascot to symbolize the characteristics of the colors and progress of Alpha Gamma Delta. In the autumn tints, so beautifully dear to us in the song of that name, they received the suggestion, and the little squirrel, typical frequenter of autumn haunts, was chosen as the mascot. Our little friend, we find, is also nimble and agile--he leaps from branch to branch and accomplishes such progress to symbolize the spirit that never dies, the spirit of energetic alertness and progress."

For decades Skiouros was used as the title for an esoteric newsletter (as opposed to the exoteric Quarterly) circulated to those serving on Official Family (=province and council). Many NPC groups started to promote mascots in the late 1960's/early 1970's. Skiouros was reintroduced as a mascot at the 1972 Convention. (Brass replicas of founder Emily H. Butterfield's version of Skiouros were given as banquet favors. I still have mine--the beginning of my squirrel collection.)

AGDAlum

who echoes the concern about copyright violation on the part of those GLOs who choose Winnie the Pooh, Raggedy Ann, or another 'commercial' character as a mascot--do you have the resources for a legal defense if you get sued? or to pay the fine?

In defense of Myself

Having started this thread, I feel the obligation to defend my reasoning for it. I probably should have been a little more vague about the title of the thread as you all can see by the animosity i have got. Out of the mascots that I have heard of, the squirrel seemed to be the least meaningful. I am just judging from what I know about squirrels:

-Gatherers
-Pests
-Cute
-Lives in my attic
-Have woken up with one staring at me on our sleeping porch, we (my brothers and I) then were kinda freaked out and pushed it out the window with a broom. It actually fell to the ground from three stories up. Its like it just died standing up or something but it did move a little so we knew it was okay, (so I kinda think they are not all there)
-Attack every once in a while

I am sorry I feel this way and I'm sorry I'm so negative. I do however think that it is meaningless to base your mascot on a scale of cuteness. I mean do you really think that the bear mascot is that popular because of its meaning? I have my doubts. If it was cuteness however, wouldn;t a Golden Retriever puppy be the mascot.

After reading the explanation for the squirrel, I understand the reasoning. Sounds good. Still, just like myself, after hearing the fact that you have a squirrel for a mascot, a rushee may be dissuaded (you and I know how stupid this reason would be, but it happens nonetheless) to join your house. But a mascot is a mascot for a reason and your right in that the mascot should present the behaviors of the organization.

The explanation of our mascot: "The unicorn head with its severed part jagged, as having been forcibly torn from the animal" represents in our fraternity our fight to become an organization that we had to fight to find our ideals. The mystical creature of the unicorn represents what we had to go through to do this. See... to me this is an idea of a mascot as we will remember this fact everytime we see our mascot.

Which brings me to two questions: Can only an animal be a mascot (I'd personally say no due to the fact)? and if you could re-do it what would your mascot be?

do you know who would be a good mascot...? Ghandi

It should have been "had heard of" becuase the bumblebee is way worse. "Because it matched the colors"... That is a good reason. I am sorry if I offended anyone.

I think the bumblebee's a pretty cool mascot. According to the laws of aerodynamics, the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but nobody's told the bumblebee that.

Ok i think that everyone's mascot could be pretty lame if you look at it a certain way...I mean it's just a matter of opinion. A severed unicorn to be sounds pretty lame, just like it's supposed to be gross for testosterone's sake. Then again I can see someone think the Alpha Phi bear is lame cuz its "cutesy" but the reasons behind us choosing the mascot has to do with Ursa Major.........in any case it just comes down to the fact that you can criticize any groups mascot and the only thing this thread is doing is putting greeks against greeks.

just my 2 pesos.

I would think so. There were definitely issues with HASBRO when Delta Gamma wanted to make the Raggedy Ann doll a Hannah, or something like that.

I think that as long as the GLO's members understand the reasoning for selecting a particular mascot or color scheme, that is more important than if someone on the outside likes it or not.
When you get down to it, if the meaning of the outside symbols don't represent anything to you, the secret things probably won't mean as much.

On Greekchat, I believe, esp. in the Rush thread, there are posts about pnms picking/not picking a GLO because they did/didn't like the mascot or colors.

Boy, if that doesn't show the determination of an Alpha Gam, I don't know what does!

3 ways to tell it's not a squirrel:

1. It is smaller (unless it's a baby).
2. I think it has a stripe down the back.
3. Likes to wear oversized t-shirts and sing (aka Alvin)....oh wait, sometime AGDs do that

2 points from me...

First, I'm a fan of squirrels! I think they are very cute and I see tons of them on my walk to the train everyday. I always think how it must be nice for AGDs to see their mascot all the time and be reminded what it stands for. You don't see real owls too often - unless you own a barn.

Second, I think 'stupidest' is a word. According to dictionary.com

stu·pid __ _P_ __ Pronunciation Key __(st pd, sty -)
adj. stu·pid·er, stu·pid·est
Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake.
Dazed, stunned, or stupefied.
Pointless; worthless: a stupid job.
n.
A stupid or foolish person.

However, that does NOT mean I agree with calling a mascot "the stupidest". They all mean somethig to their members and are "the best" to someone!

You may have misunderstood me. When we woke up in the morning, the squirrel was just standing there. Then we forced it outside with a broom and it didn't really respond to the broom. It just kinda fell off the windowsil. I'm not sure what happened to it after that.

I think a squirrel is a very lovely mascot. I know to many AGDs having a living breathing mascot running around campus is a pleasant reminder of their beautiful sisterhood many places they go. Squirrels always look nice in their neutral colored fur coats, and they are good workers with excellent time management skills. They prepare ahead for winter, and are agile climbers.

My campus has some aggressive squirrels. I had one follow me to class last summer, another was sitting on the hood of my car, and yet another kamikazied out of a tree in front of Kappa and was eyeballing me. The squirrels that reside outside of my building now come and greet me at the sidewalk and bring me presents. One got in a bedroom in my building and was trapped behind the blinds. It ended up falling out of the third story window and has a little bit of brain damage now. Poor little critter.

Just becareful of the squirrel mafia over at UW. They may find out you called them stupid and rise up out of the trees against you. Having a "stoning" by acorns is not a good way to go.
