A few Greek Chat hints

-If there's a thread you don't want people to read, don't keep replying to it. It only bumps it back to the top of the "today's threads" list which is the first place many people look on GC.

-If you say something bitchy, even if your letters are not in your screen name, people can search for all your posts. If you have posted in your fraternity or sorority's forum, and either stated or have a screen name that gives away your location, people will be able to figure out what group you are in and what chapter.

-If you come to a message board dedicated to Greek Life and never make any posts about any aspect of Greek Life, or mention it, people will probably think you're not quite legit. If all you ever post about is this or that consumer product or movie or TV show, people will probably realize you're using a form of spam called "stealth marketing."

Thank you, drive through.

what does it matter what organization you're in? the comments on this site aren't representative of that organization. if i say some shit that doesn't go well with some frat, there is always being checked in private. like any of us really care what people on this site think about us outside of our frat or sorors. what does that mean, then? you're going to look at my bruhs crazy when you see them because of something i or someone else said?

nooo, I mean if you say something to the effect of "All the XYZs at Clarion are bitches" even if you don't have your GLO's name in your post, if some of your past posts refer to your school and/or your GLO people can figure out who you are. It might not be happy if one of the XYZs comes up to you or your brothers/sisters in real life and calls you on your comment.

I was just reminding everyone that the Internet is not very anonymous so don't say anything on this board you wouldn't say to someone's face.

Which includes telling me that I didn't "earn" my letters. I've had a certain person on here say that repeatedly, and I know his brothers on my campus don't feel the same way.

Also, as long as we're making reminders: When you are a rushee, be careful what you say if you want to remain anonymous. I can recognize our pref ceremony in just about every description there is, and I bet there's a lot of other sisters on here who can do the same.

Like Senusret said, you're representing your GLO anytime you speak/type with your letters on. And since this isn't a private forum, you're also representing Greeks as a whole. It can affect other people's image of you/your GLO/Greeks in general. While some may not care what others think of them, we should all care how people view the Greek community.

and while that's all fine and dandy, i personally could care less how non-greeks view other organizations. i doubt someone from another organization or a non-greek is going to come and check me. i can understand is someone is running off at the mouth about how hard they "pledged" or some mess like that, but if it's a non-greek related forum, what someone else says from another frat or sorority isn't going to bother me in the least bit. if we had a bruh come on here and spout of something ignorant; if it was warranted, best believe that'll be handled behind closed doors and no one will ever get wind of it. i just try and represent mine. but everything i say doesn't have to be the stance of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, INC.

i love my frat, i love my bruhs, and you're going to disagree with your bruhs once in a while and you're going to have people in all organizations saying crass shit, that's life. and that happens all the time on a "free" message board. is anyone really going to come on here and say "man, he said something stupid, let's see what organization he's in." if they are, cool...guess that's life, too. like i said, if a non-greek comes on here and sees what i said and bases all Iotas on what i said, said person needs to open up their mind.

Why not hold yourself to a higher standard in the first place?

When you attach your letters to it.

If I say "I don't like bananas" with my letters in my sig, some people, Greeks and non-Greeks alike, are going to assume "Gamma Phi Beta does not like bananas." While bananas aren't exactly an inflammatory issue, some other topics discussed on GC are, and when some posters represent their views in an angry/bigoted manner, it will SHAME their organization.

I think we should pride our organizations a little more. I'm sure the majority of us are guilty of saying something every once in awhile we wish we wouldn't have and regret that our words reflect upon our GLO and Greeks. However, some people have a tendency to always speak in a manner that reflects poorly on their GLO. Do I automatically think, "oh, XYZ sorority is full of bitchy/slutty/whatever women"? No, but if I see several people from the same org posting in the same manner, then yes, I do begin to form opinions. I'm open minded enough to know that not every single member is like that, but I do think some represent their org poorly. As far as non-Greeks go, some of these non-Greeks may be considering going Greek. If they log on here and read some of the trash that is posted, then it may change their mind.
I think it should go without saying that we always represent our orgs and Greeks when we join and we should hold that to a higher standard.

no no no no

hold on....everyone is misinterpreting what I said. I didn't mean you shouldn't say this or that because what one person says is representing their whole GLO. I personally don't agree with that. I meant you should watch what you say because unless you've protected your identity very carefully it may come back to bite you or your chapter sisters/brothers in the ass.

I don't think it's a misinterpretation.....you are speaking specifically, while others are speaking generally.
