Question Average Waiting Period

I've been doing some interviewing and the time they tell me that they will get back to me is extremely varied with each job. I've been told anywhere from 7 days to 4 weeks. Anybody have any advice/input on what an average time period might be and maybe when I should contact them if I hadn't heard back? I know they say that they are interviewing alot of people, but more than a week or two just seems awfully long.

with one company that i interviewed with last summer, i started calling after 3 weeks i think. and i kept calling until i finally got to speak to the person, i kept getting voicemail for awhile. of course, she put me off and said they hadn't come to a decision yet. a few weeks later, i got another job so i stopped trying to get information from her. and you know what, i never actually heard if i was rejected from the position or not!

I don't know if there is an average waiting time. Some organizations seem to take for ever. My dad recently started a new job that he applied for over a year an a half ago. That's a right a year and a half! He hadn't thought much about the positon until one day he got a call and asked in for an interview. And yes, it was the same position he had applied too.
I think if you're truely interested in the position you should follow up with them after a week or 2 unless they give you a time frame when they will be finished interviewing and follow up with them after that.

I used to think 2 weeks was a long time, but not anymore. A year and a half is insane, though! I may just be naive, though...I mean, I actually thought that employers would be nice to people interested in working for them, but the last time I turned in an application, the lady just snatched it from me without a word...no thank-you, no have-a-nice-day, no kiss-my-a$$ or anything. I didn't call them back, either.

Wow, a year and a half! That's nuts. Well I just found out that I didn't get the job that I was waiting to hear about but I'm still waiting on some others. This getting a job idea is overrated
