I have some experience with charity walks. If you keep it simple, overhead costs are nearly zero. If you really need cash to begin, think about requiring a registration fee for individuals and/or teams. Consider asking local businesses to donate water, oranges, cookies, etc. For their donations, you could place signs with their logos at the start or finish line.
Your cause is a very worthwhile one, so be sure to let everyone in your community know where the money is going. When targeting potential walkers, think about who is especially interested in raising money for orphaned animals.
