Spades: Auburn elite and secret political machine

Here's a long article about the Spades, Auburn elite and secret political machine. If you've enjoyed the previous threads about Bush's Yale Skull and Crescent and Alabama's Machine, here's another good one.

The membership list includes the president of BSU. I wonder if that is Black Students union or Baptist Students Union?

A quick search of AU's website would tell you that for Charrus, BSU stands for Black Student Union.

I don't remember Spades as being controversial or super-secret when I was a student. They were just another honor society like ODK or Blue Key.

carnation, some people just have a problem with successful people, I've noticed.

Ohh.... A group of successful people... Must be a CONSPIRACY!

People have paranoia.

I doubt the Black Student Union is what they are reffering to since the article clearly states,

Few women or minorities have ever been Spades.

"It would probably behoove the group as an honor society to incorporate more women and minorities," Barrow said.

From what I understand, Spades is still more of an honor than it is a secret organization. It's a group of up-coming senior men taped by the preceding Spades because of their influence on campus, leadership, and other qualities. It's a boys only club, with the women's equivalent being the Cater Society. I wouldn't take The Plainsman too seriously on this subject. It seems like right now they don't have a very high opinion of Greek life and anything associated with it. This translates to Spades because usually some of the members are also members of some of the larger and more influential fraternities on campus. Most people I know just get a few giggles about it and then go on about our lives.
