Virus!
I've been getting a lot of notices "from" Microsoft, to download a patch in wake of the new viruses (viri?) coming out. I've downloaded it.
It's a hoax!
Not only is it a hoax, but it contains a virus!!! I got help through www.getvirushelp.com, and was able to download a cleaner & filter - for free, I might add.
The cleaner I used was at http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger - but the site very complete.
Just thought I'd pass on the information!

Thanks for the info!
Microsoft routinely posts security updates and the like at windowsupdate.microsoft.com If you use any Windows OS, you can go there to download any patches you may need.

K so either my computer is having PMS or it has a virus! I turn it on and about 10 minutes later it either:
Freezes
Goes pitch black
Goes pinstripe
Then I'll shut the computer off and try to restart to only have the computer load but the mouse not work....
Or the monitor flashes.
Does anyone know of any knew viruses out there? I know I should get a virus scan and I intend to....but HELP!

honeychile, thanks for the info
Hootie: your best bet is to get a virus scan and run it on your system It could be a technical thing also... like if your hard drive is a dinosaur it might be ready to just die. I would check with a virus scan first though. I'm sure we have lots of computer people on the boards so they might be able to help

The two best things you can do:
1) Get a virus scan that is constantly running. It will check all email attachments and all the files that you download. Norton and McAfee have great virus scans.
2) Get automatic updates from Microsoft. Either go to their website or have them automatically updated to your computer when you go on the internet. I don't advise that Microsoft updates be emailed to you....there's a lot of hoaxes out there and you could mistake a virus for being a real update.

Hootie, did you recently install any new hardware or software on your machine?
Oh, and get anti-virus software. I use McAfee and it does wonders - blocks pop-ups and spam as well.

My piece of shit computer does the same thing!!!!!!!! Sometimes it'll even say it's recording or writing to a cd when no cd is in the burner drive!!!!!! When you find out what's causing your problem let me know, cuz it sounds like we have the same problem.
I did get a virsus scan a couple months back and it did find a nasty virus on it and removed it, but I still have problems. People tell me i need to either get a new harddrive and reinstall everything(which would be a bitch) or completely reformat my harddrive and reinstall windows( which would be a bitch too).
I think i need a new machine. This thing hasnt worked right since the big ice storm in February, and my monitor is f*&^erd too!
