so very sad

Yeah I was on CNN's website, and they have the updated American casulties list on - complete with the person's picture. It makes it so much more real with pictures instead of just names. Dallas Morning News has the 9/11 victims with pictures - very very sad.

I guess I'm just overreacting today, but I don't think I'm going to get any sleep. My husband is working at a Dallas firestation today and I'm freaking out that something is going to happen. I know I know paranoia.....but still....that little fear in the back of my head. That and because the "drills" they did yesterday at Texas Stadium looked like a bunch of high schoolers running around with food poisoning.....did not make me feel better about Dallas first responders!!

Meredith you are completely entitled to overreact today. I will be thinking about your husband. But hopefully today will be like any other day.
Our firefighters are very brave, and so are their significant others that support them.

I can't watch the ceremony at the WTC. I had no idea that these children were going to be relatives of those that died on 9/11.

I just heard a young boy and girl say they lost their father, an aunt and an uncle. I can't even imagine.

The one I will never forget is the Irishman who worked in the WTC - survived....then found out that his sister and niece were in the plane that his tower, and their best friend, was in the other plane that hit the other tower.

*shudders* I can't even fathom that kind of loss.

I'm about to leave for a memorial at noon for the firemen - I probably won't make it through without crying like a baby.

Being in the city, you just can't escape the memorials if you wanted to--especially on TV. I will probably do something later on today--in the middle of my school's green, there is a person reading the victims' names from 9 am to 5 pm today.

On a similar note I was driving to class this morning and on every station they were talking about 9/11 or telling stories...on station even took a 60 seconds of silence in rememberance.

It took everything I could not to start crying while driving in the rain

Cheney was asked not to be at Ground Zero today due to security concerns. He was at the Port Authority, instead.

The reason the Bush administration did not attend the memorial service at Ground Zero is due to security reasons. They believed that the presence of the security might draw attention away from the grieving families.

thats why we hire and pay the secret service

If anything it was a slap in the face to the families of the victims - if they weren't going to be there this year, why last year?

The President arrived last year in the evening after most of the memorials were read. I don't think that it is a slap in the face of the grieving families. When I attended a funeral of a family friend who was lost on September 11th, the Mayor did not attend as he had so many other FDNY funerals. The family requested that he not attend as it would draw attention away from their beloved son. Plus the logistics were almost impossible. As it was, the wake was standing room only with a two hour wait to pay respects to the family. The church was filled to capacity with family, friends, neighbors, and other fire fighters.

I can understand not wanting to draw attention - but the media coverage was already there - every news station was covering the children reading the names. All we saw of Bush was him trotting out on the South Lawn with Laura, bow his head, talk a little bit and that was it. On this day of national grieving, our President should have been there, thats all I'm saying. He takes tours through Dallas at the drop of a hat to raise money on a moments notice but they can't arrange a morning jaunt to NYC?

just putting my 2 cents in

If the President would have attended the event, some would have found fault with that. It is sad indeed.

The Governor of New York specifically requested them not to be there.

like I said - just putting my 2 cents in

we didn't want to draw attention to this yet every news station covered it, every newspaper ran stories on it, and everyone talked about it today

I think its ironic Shrub will fly across the country to raise $$$ but he won't even go to Port Authority (since Bloomberg asked him not to be there)
