what's going on at my school?

when i started at Ohio U in Fall 2001 i saw the greek system and i thought it looked great. everyone was really friendly, greeks seemed really involved and i saw letters everywhere. then, this past year we got our new greek advisor. he's really been trying to unify the greek community and i really thought that was a good thing. i went back to OU for a day this past weekend. as you know my chapter closed at the end of spring quarter and is planning on recolonizing in fall 2004. as it turns out, when we get back to school our campus's greek community will be short one NPC sorority, a NPHC sorority was suspended (i think they are going to be back this year, i don't think they were kicked off permanently) and two fraternities (Sigma Chi and Sigma Alpha Mu), we almost lost a second sorority this past year, and it's very likely that we will lose another fraternity within this upcoming school year. i just don't understand how our greek system could die so rapidly. most of the GLO's are housed here (all sororities and a little more than half the fraternities) and recruitment is very heavily advertised all over campus, usually for weeks before it actaully begins. i just don't understand it.

Well the one thing I can think of is that maybe this is just part of the life cycle your greek community is going through. Like in any group or even life, you grow and then you drop off, sometimes called "die"ing. This may just be the "dead" season in your greek community's life.

That or sometimes a strong community isn't a healthy or good community. The reason for GLO's leaving or being suspended maybe more than just recruitment. I don't know the chapters at Ohio U so please don't flame me, this is more of a blanket statement

Sometimes the biggest and most powerful on campus aren't the best or even a good place. Sometimes they don't live the ideals of their org.

Yet, sometimes they are a great chapter and live the ideals of their organization beyond the expectations of anyone.

Just a thought from what I've seen at my campus and read about from other campuses.

Don't know about the Sammys, but the word is that Sigma Chi has only been OFF probation a total of about ten days in the past heaven knows how many years. What I heard is that Charles Ping (former President) is a Sigma Chi, and protected them. When he resigned, it was only a matter of time. In fact, they lasted longer than many thought they could.

That's total hearsay, by the way. I have no personal knowledge of that situation.

When I heard about it, I was pretty shocked, because the Sigs were a really strong chapter made up of outstanding men when I was in school there 30 years ago.

I do know that President Glidden isn't much of a Greek supporter. I kind of tried to broach the subject with him once, but got nowhere.
