what does "deuteron" mean?
I can't believe I have been an active sorority girl for 2 years and do not know this, but what does it mean when a GLO chapter name has "deuteron" in it? I know this is not a greek letter, and it doesn't seem like a duplicate or something. Does this denote a colony or something?? I know someone on here knows the answer!

That's a thread in which the answer has been posted. Apparently, it means "rebirth" and is affixed to chapters of certain orgs to denote reactivation.

As far as I know, Phi Sigma Kappa is the only GLO that uses deuteron, triton, etc. naming for chapters. These are the greek words for two, three, four, etc. I think. The greek letters were used to denote the first "set" of chapters of Phi Sig, and then the next set had the greek word for two after the greek letter. As for my chapter, Zeta Triton, that means that we are in the third set of Phi Sig chapters. Hope I was able to explain things relatively clearly

Theta Delta Chi also uses the greek numbers, but, they using as a totally different meaning than we Phi Sigs do. It was explained to me once but I don't quite understand it well enough to explain it. If there are any Theta Delta Chi's out there who could explain it I'm sure we would all greatly appreciate it.

Alpha Phi uses that too.
The Boston U chapter is Eta Deuteron -- early chapter, closed by Admin during the Great Greek Witch Hunt then reopened in the mid 1980s.

I believe I read somewhere that the Greek word "deuteron" means 'the second time' or 'again.'
I like the interpretation that Senusret I mentioned: 'rebirth.' I think that is applicable too.

Kappa uses deuteron to denote a chapter that has closed and reopened, too.
What other orgs use it?

The way Phi Sigma Kappa uses it doesn't have anything to do with whether the chapter was ever closed - they do it instead of having two Greek letters. (See PSK480, I did learn something lo those many years ago .)

Oooohhhhhh...thanks so much! I knew Alpha Phi used it, but there were only a few chapters with it. I tried to search for a previous thread about this and couldn't find one, so sorry about the repeat. But you guys answered my question! Thanks!

Alpha Xi Delta has an Alpha Deuteron chapter which consists of those women that are National Convention initiates. All other members are initiated into or by college chapters.

"Deuteron" simply means "second," or "the second," as in "[the] first, [the] second, [the] third..."
Among those GLOs that use it, it can have different meanings, such as a chapter that has closed and been re-opened, or simply the second chapter with a given letter designation (e.g., Alpha Deuteron and Beta Deuteron instead of the more common Alpha Alpha and Alpha Beta).

Another thing about Phi Sigma Kappa chapter designations, is not only do we use the numbering system (I think we're up to Septaton), we also have the chapters that were formerly Phi Sigma Epsilon chapters pre-1985, and are designated as Epsilon Alpha, Epsilon Beta, etc. Most people are usually totally confused by our chapter designation system!

Good call, I was just about to say that - that's my girlfriend's chapter of Alpha Phi, she graduated this year.
I had asked her why her chapter was Eta Deuteron, I forgot that it was because of the closing.
(hopefully in a few years we'll be talking about the Great Greek Rebirth at Boston U.)

you're one of the few who has learned and understands it. like BSUPhiSig said, many people are confused my our system. We even use greek letters to designate what series. I think they're used as superscript. Deuteron is Delta, Triton is Tau, Tetarton is Slanted T from left to right with two bars at the bottom, Pentaton is Pi, Hexaton is Eta, and Septaton is Sigma. We're up to Septaton, and I'm not sure how far through that series we are.

lower case alpha?
Alright so here is a new question: what does it mean when there is a lower case alpha in front of a GLO name? I have heard that it means it is an asian frat/sorority....but I was never quite sure. I know that there are some org's with 4 letters in their name (like Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi from the first Sorority Life on MTV) but this seemed different cuz it's a lower case alpha. Does anyone know what I am talking about???
