Dilemna/Question for GREEKS ONLY

OK...this question is intended for my Sorors and members of other Greek orgs....

What would YOU do if you found out that your line-sister/brother had stolen or extorted money from your chapter's treasurery?

How would you vote?
Suspension (for how long)?
Expulsion?
Allow to remain active?

Under what circumstances would you abstain from a vote like this?

I would look at if there is any precedent. If there is I would probably consider issuing the same punishment. However I would stop short of expulsion.

If this was a repeated occurance and this member couldn't be trusted, we just might have to expel him from the chapter, although would be the absolute LAST option.

- I would vote to investigate first because one person should not have control over all the money.

- I would at least suspend for a semester, then allow to remain active, but with limited duties.

- I don't see any reason to abstain.

This person will get blackballed and talked about, so I think being an 'outcast' may be the worst punishment. It may hurt their future in the org when they seek leadership positions.

Several organization's constitutions and SOP's have provisions regarding this matter.

This matter should be brought to the member privately first, then just as with any other corporate entity, the issue should be handle with extreme scrutiny and under mediation, internally.

If all other recourses have been exhausted, then the best course of action is to take punitive damages.

Depending on the extent of damage, knowingly or unknowingly, persons of higher positions may need notification...

Looooonnnnngggg time ago a member of my church extorted money from the youth fund. It was found by an audit. My mother chaired the committee to find out what happened to the money and why. She identified the person and discovered that this person was in dire familial financial straits and there was utmost temptation to steal from the church youth fund... The person had intended to pay the money back before it got noticed missing, but it was too late. However, the best thing my mother did was not to embarass this person, nor persecute the person for the stealing. And it was a good lesson in hate the sin, not the sinner... It test one's Christianity...

So that is just one way to approach a sensitive situation such as the one you described...

The only reason I can think of to abstain is if the person had a strong relationship with you before you became members - for example, it's your younger sister or brother or a very good family friend.

Thumbs down Get rid of the THIEF.

Something to think about....THE PERSON IS STEALING YOUR money. A CRIME. I don't know if this is an ACTUAL situation, but people need to be held accountable for their actions. There is a process, especially in greekdom that is to be followed. I know for a fact in OUR organization. It's called PROTOCOL.

Don't play with me OR my money.

I have to say I agree with AKA2D '91 on this. I think stealing form the org is a complete affront to the org, its mission and it's founders. It is an abuse of whatever position your brothers or sisters have entrusted to you. You are stealing form your sisters and brothers and the community that you are pledged to serve and who have financially supported the chapter by attending your events.

I am sure most of the orgs have policies to deal with the situation and they should be followed by all means. You can still distinguish the sinner from the sin but that should not mean that they do not suffer the appropriate prescribed consequences. As a society we spend way too much time making excuses and creating rules only to find reasons to disregard them. Follow the appropriate steps would be my answer.

Well said. However, I think the situation should be thoroughly and discreetly investigated before any action is decided. If she NEEDED the money and intended or offers to pay it back, a slap on the hand is good. If she was being scandalous, result to those pink and green books.

I have to disagree with this. I see that you are "new", but stealing is STEALING! Again, if so and so needed the money, there are things such as loans, there are paycheck, payday places all over the place. The person could have asked his or her soror/ fraternity brother for assistance, direction, or guidance.

This is the very reason we have issues going on in our orgs AND society at large. Get rid of the rif rafs. Thieves belong in jail. Obviously those who are ripping off their chapter, etc. aren't thinking about the chapter or the MEMBERS of the chapter, or even those they serve. They are only thinking about THEMSELVES...HELPING THEMSELVES!

When are we going to stop making excuses for people and their inappropriate behaviors? Yeah, follow the procedures to investigate. If he or she is found guilty...YA GOTTA GO. Get the heck out of dodge, then find a nice spot at the local jail. Don't forget to go for their letters. If you are woman/man enough to do the crime, you are woman/man enough to do the time and accept whatever consequences follow.

Please, don't say anything about being sisterly. If it were my chapter member, obviously she wasn't thinking about being sisterly when she took the $$$.

Hopefully, Soror Prayerfull this is a hypothetical situation.

I would definately investigate the whole thing and let the accused try and defend themself. We had a situation like this and it turned out that we had some late production fees attached to some stuff we ordered and the company we ordered the stuff from slapped us with 20% upcharge....Needless to say if you ordered $2,000 worth of stuff, thats a lot of money. So some of it could be hidden fees that got drafted out of the account.
