The state you live in and stereotypes

Hi y'all!!

We all get annoyed when people stereotype our states. Like associating Georgia with peaches, Maine with lobsters, or....Arkansas(where I'm from) with hillbillies. (ugggh)

BUT....

Have you ever really looked around and realized that, to some extent, sometimes those stereotypes have some truth to them?

I'm from a small town in Arkansas (Ravenden--population around 500), and here's things I see on a regular basis when I'm home during the summer. I didn't notice them so much until I had been at college and then came home.

1)all the good ol' boys driving beat up pick-ups with a dog in the back, usually the truck is camo-painted.

2)I see a lot of mullets. Some on women....

3)The "small town mentality", as I call it, is that after high school, you get married and have kids. Out of my class of 28 people, half of them girls, only me and one other girl are NOT married. And I'm only 20!

4)If you want to run into anyone you know, go to the nearest Wal-Mart. That's where everyone's at. There's nothing else to do in small towns but eat and go to Wal-Mart.

5)During hunting season, guys will come to school in full camo, all season long.

6)Small town people typically never leave. Go back years later, and they're STILL THERE, cruising the tiny strip, drinking beer, wearing the same clothes they wore when they were in high school a decade ago.

7)Small-town women don't catch onto changes in styles of clothing or hair. Most women still have the early 90's look going on.

8)features on a car such as power windows, keyless entry, or the like are seen as "fancy" and for the "rich".


We all get mad when people stereotype us. But how about we start a thread on the funny stereotypes that turn out to be TRUE about where we live?

And remember, I love Arkansas, and for all the things that annoy me, there's dozens more things that I love about it. I just thought it'd be fun to all laugh at our home states.

Even though DC is the murder capital of the country, Its still a nice city lol. DC had 262 murders last year.

Wow, That is something else! I'm from a very large metropolitan area myself but every time I go up north to vacation in Michigan we'll end up stopping in these little towns and it's exactly the same. I think all of the steroetypes of Detroit that I've heard are absolutely true.

Well Miami and South Fla, yes. But I live in Tallahassee, which is basically South Ga. It is COUNTRY.

people tend to think we love our alligators and live in the swamps and bayous. we even have our own boudreaux and thibodeaux jokes! i'm 1/4 boudreaux, so i've got some of the cajun blood in me.

I don't know about NY State stereotypes as much, but for NYC we're supposed to be rude, arrogant, pushy, and inconsiderate. Also foul-mouthed and cold-hearted. I think that generally we are pretty arrogant about being from NYC, but other than that we're nice folk.

double whammy....lived in alabama and kentucky

we don't ALL live in trailors, we don't ALL marry our relatives, we don't ALL walk around pregnant and barefoot....

however, there are def some ppl who DO.....in the eastern ky hills, we do have such a thing as "blue ppl" where they have been in-bred so much, they are of a blue tint. don't believe me, do a google search. i didn't believe it either when i first heard it in my 10th grade chem class, and it's not something to be all proud of and tell the world , but hey.....there it is.

stereotypes, though not the greatest thing in the world, come from somewhere. so, obviously, there is a fair share of this stuff in these two areas...as well as other Southern states.

How can SO MANY murders happen within such a relatively small piece of land? I don't get it? Is there a lot of gang activity/criminal activity? Sorry to be an ignoramous but I genuinely want to know. You'd think that with DC being the 'seat of gov't' that things would be a bit more genteel somehow (or not).

Let's see.. dirty jersey, we have the attitude, we're going to step on a needle if we go to the beach, we're crazy drivers... the list goes on...

But for you NEW JERSEY folks... check this out:

"You Know If You're From New Jersey" one... here are a few:

-You don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges."
-You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags.
-You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
-You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
-At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen.
-You know the town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
-You know what a "jug handle" is.
-You know that WaWa is a convenience store.
-You know that the state isn't all farmland.
-You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey. There's "The Shore". And you don't go "to the shore". You go "down the Shore". And when you are there, you're not "at the shore", you are "down the Shore".
-Even your school cafeteria made good Italian subs. And it's a Sub, not a submarine sandwich or - worse yet, a hoagie, a her! o, or a grinder.
-You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.
-You knew that the last sentence had to do with driving.
-You know that this is the only "New..." state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (like, try... Mexico, .... York, ... Hampshire ... doesn't work, does it?)
-You only go to New York City for day trips, and you call it "The City."
-You go to "The City" to get a good knish, but great pierogies can be found just around the corner.
-You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
-You don't think "What exit" is very funny.
-You know that the first "strip shopping center" in the country was on Route 22.
-The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school, church or local bar.
-You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
-You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
-Every year, you had a least one kid in your class named Tony.
-You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening credits.
-You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall.
-You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, and people from Central Jersey go to Belmar and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way.
-You don't consider Newark or Camden to actually be part of the state.
-You've had a Boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries.
-You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally ...
-You've NEVER, NEVER pumped your own gas.

One would think. The majority crime I would say happens east of the anacostia river. I dont think there a lot of gang activitity. I have no reasons why there is so many murders.

I don't live in Colorado, but whenever I mention that I may move there, I get "Oh, do you ski?"

No, I don't. It's not like the state is just one big gigantic mountain and everybody skis to work every day.

Well, I am from Eastern Ky (granted its North Eastern) and I promise I have never met anyone who is inbreed. Nor, have I met anyone who doesn't have shoes!!!! Like I've said before "Kentucky is not a third world country!!!!!!"
