				Expanding

I noticed that a number of local organizations out there were expanding into Beta Chapters, and I was just wondering about the process--and more than that, what changes in being local does that affect. We were approached last semester by girls from another school who would like to have a chapter of us ther--our jaws sort of dropped, and, to be honest, we are more than a little thrown off guard. We're going to be voting on it, and currently are coming up with contingency plans for starting up a new chapter and figuring out all the details--so we're okay on that. I just wanted to know how it's affected other local organizations--for a more informed decision, I guess.

				What we do?

We are currently up to our Iota Chapter? What happens is we receive notice that a school is interested and we take it to our founders they vote we do. We have an interest meeting, conduct interview and have our selection process. We usually have to have a minimum of 5 persons interested.

If you have 2 chapters, are you still considered local?

Hello. I have a question regarding the term 'local.' My fraternity has been a prestigious local organization for over 100 years. We recently formed a second chapter at another school. Are we still considered local? Or would regional be more appropriate. It's only two chapters, but it has thrown our definition off. I know we are not national, so the question is, can a fraternity with 2 chapters be considered local? Or would we than be regional?

Thanks.

National or regional - It depends on your organization's goals and self perception. Does the fraternity want to expand across the country or remain in one specific geographical organization? There are pros and cons to both scenarios. What has your council stated about long range planning?

Where are your chapters located? I looked on your website but I didn't see anything about your other chapters.

Does anyone have any advice on expanding a local group to say, two or three chapters. I'd like to stay a local, being national seems so Big to me, but i like the idea of having a few chapters around at other schools.

Where do your alums live? Are they concentrated near bigger cities? Are they near your local? I'd first start with strong alumni chapters. Each one could start a local at a nearby campus. If you have strong alums near your present campus, you may look to start a second chapter at another nearby school?

A lot depends on how willing a school (or the greek council at that school) is toward expansion. If there are faculty members who are alums, that is a plus. However, greeks like greeks, and you may find a faculty member from another house, who would be willing to mentor or sponsor your local.

no alumns--we are only one year old... is it a good idea to have members graduate first before we try to start a second chapter?
We are non a coligate sorority, we are wondering if we should get recognition from the city...
then maybe we might become city- wide?
