plane reads

i'm sure this topic or something close to it has been discussed before but i thought i'd bring it up again:

what books do you suggest one read on long plane ride?

i'll be leaving to study abroad in australia in about three weeks and while i'm super excited for the trip, i could be less than thrilled about the 15 hour flight!

please help me relieve the boredom!

The last plane ride I was on, I was reading the 4th Harry Potter book.

Whether or not you like the HP series... read something long! and light. It can be really hard to concentrate on reading when the stewardesses are constantly going by, people are talking, there is turbulence, etc.

For a flight as long as yours, I'd suggest taking a book and also a magazine or something with short reading/pictures. It'll give you the necessary breaks from just staring down and reading.

I have a trip coming up as well, and I hope to have my hands on the new Harry Potter before I leave!

Otherwise, I stockpile magazines before I take a trip and read them on the flight.

On such long flights, they sometimes show movies too.

I'd try to sleep a lot on that plane ride! When I didn't sleep most of the 8 hour trip to France I was beat! It was also 8 AM local time and I had to make it through the rest of the day... it was hell!

A really fun book to read on a plane ride is "Franco American Dreams," but I'm not sure of the author. It's about a girl named Abbie and her perils w/ dating loser-type-but-really-hot guys. She's an aspiring fashion designer at a school in Dallas, TX, and it talks about her nights out w/ her friends, etc. It's really cute, and really funny. It's written *almost* in diary-type form but it's not like "January 1, 2003: I did this, this, this, and this." I loved it.

1) Lucky Girl! I love Australia! Where are you going? It sounds so fun! I loved it when I was there.

2) If you want to eat well, order the fruit platter for your meals NOW. (Are you flying Qantas?). I did and I felt like a million bucks when I got off the plane (better than if you are full of the yucky quiche and lasagne that they serve).

As for books, I quite enjoyed "In a Sunburned Country", by Bill Bryson (a travel book about his trip in Australia). It was great and very funny.

Top 5 suggestions:

1. Harry Potter books - fun books, easy to read and long enough to last you the whole trip

2. Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy omnibus - on sale at Barnes and Nobles for 6 bucks (although I would actually pay the retail price of 18.00 for it), a GREAT series, funny and smart. Always entertaining.

3. On the trashy romance novel front - anything by Christina Dodd or Jane Quinn. I read these when I drove to Florida ( LONG ASS RIDE from NY) with my family. They're fun books and fairly modern by romance novel standards. I didn't want to throw the book away in fury at how dumb the heroine was, which was refreshing (am I the only one who feels that way about most romance novels? like why would any woman in her right mind go within ten feet of this asshole?)

4. Dune - my favorite book ever, I don't know how travel-ready it is but it's just an awesome book.

5. The Dilbert Principle - funny book, easy read, makes you TOO glad not to be in the office

depends on what kind of books you like..personally i'd recommend:

good in bed - jennifer weiner

summer sisters - judy blume

the shopaholic series (confessions of a shopaholic, shopaholic takes manhattan, etc..)

jemima j. - jane green

the lovely bones - alice sebold

white oleander - (i forget who wrote this)

shes come undone - wally lamb

all of these are extremely fast reads..i think i read most of them in a day

When I flew from JFK to Buenos Aires in December 2001, I read Ashworth Hall by Anne Perry when I wasn't eating or trying to sleep during the flight (I drank some wine and regular coffee, not such a good combo when you are trying to sleep). It was not as long as yours, but it was about 10 or 11 hours long. I suggest you take a few books with you to read in case you finish one before you arrive in Australia. Where in Australia you are going? I wish I could go there, especially to that famous Zoo (Crocodile Hunter's that is)! Have fun!

The Devil Wears Prada is a newer and easy read that would be fun for a plane ride. The new HP also comes out this week and should be fun. Have a blast in Australia!
