Smile High School Activities

I was extremely involved at my high-school: Student gov., President of girls' service org., rowing, etc. How are these activities viewed my the sororities that will be rushing me this fall? Does one with a history of involvement and philanthropy fair better than a rushee with little or no activiies? Your opinion is valued - thanks!

Talking

Also - would I or any other candidate receive special consideration due to our participation at high school and in the community? Thanks again!

Curious:

One of the toughest things about rush is standing out from the crowd. If nothing else, your high level of involvement and experiences will give you something to talk about...which will be a refreshing break (for both you and the sisters in all of the sororities) from the "What's your name? Where are you from? What year are you? What's your major?" small talk that is the most tedious part of rush.

Good Luck! Be yourself!

amanda is right. your past service & involvement will give you something good to talk about during rush parties. however, 90% of what counts during rush is your personality & compatibility with the girls already in that sorority. your service alone won't be enough to get you in unless you can also impress the sisters with your charm, poise, sincerity, etc. they're looking for rushees who they could see themselves partying with, brushing their teeth with, etc. for the next 4 years---someone who they could become the best of friends with, not necessarily the girl who did the most service in high school.

Cool

Your involvement in high school will show 1) that you get along with lots of people and 2) that you are good at juggling your time – 2 things that are very important if you want to be a part of Greek life. Everyone else who replied to this thread is right, though, when they state that MOST of it is whether you get along with the members.

Rowing sounds neat and different – at least in this neck of the woods – that is definitely something I would talk about. Focus on the most original thing about you and play it up.

A small word of caution though – don’t go in saying “I was president of this and that” because it can sound like you’re bragging and it turns people off. You can mention it, but don’t say to every sister you meet “Hi, I’m Suzy, I was president of this and that in high school.” This girl who was homecoming queen at my high school did that. She didn’t get into a sorority.

Thanks for your input on this issue. I am not expecting involvement alone to get me through Rush. I was curious as to how important is was viewed by my potential sisters. Great advice! Thanks again!!!!!
