Just An Inquiry. . .
Hello AKAs!
I just have a question, which have been bothering me a bit. I noticed your international website is aka1908.com. However, (.com) signifies a commercial site (meaning that a site whose sole purpose is to sell and buy commodities, or just to inquire monies).
However, all the other BGLOs have wesites with (.org) at the end. This signifies a non profit organization. Examples are:
apa1906.org
dst1913.org
My question is, are you still a non profit institution?
Thanks in advance for all positive responses.

We are still a non-profit organization.
From my understanding, WE (THE SORORITY) WERE THE FIRST (AS USUAL) TO DEVELOP A WEBSITE ON THE INTERNET (AS FAR AS THE BGLOs ARE CONCERNED) AND THAT .COM WAS THE ONLY THING BEING USED. AFTER THAT TIME, .ORG WAS ESTABLISHED...THEREFORE OTHERS ARE ABLE TO USE .ORG...
If my recollection is incorrect, someone please correct me!

oops, I forgot to add. . .
Then if it is still a non profit institution, then why do you have a commercial site as your international homepage?
Thanks again in advance.

Soror AKA2D '91 that is my exact understanding too!!
sophistication30, maybe you misunderstood what my Soror stated .... the name aka1908.com was all that was available at the time and because we were the first to blaze the trails on the internet, we took what we could; and it has never been changed - but that is not a huge problem now is it? We are still a service oriented organization. Do you have any other questions on the topic still?

Hello AKA Sands,
I'm not 100% sure that your claim is entirely correct. I do know that Bingwa communications designed all of the initial sites of NPHC with the exception of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Interestingly enough, they also are the registered owners or your www.aka1908.org domain name. I do know that the dot org designation is not a new thing at all. I have been surfing the net for some years. My memory puts all of the NPHC sites launches around the same time. Why Bingwa did not transfer your site to the proper dot org url is a bit peculiar. In any event, the site is lovely.
Best to you all!
BTW,
the aka educational foundation is a dot org. http://www.akaeaf.org/home.cgi

Regardless of the web site address, Alpha Kappa Alpha is still a nonprofit service organization. I can't speak on why we have the .com designation as opposed to the .org, but I do know that we aren't the only nonprofit organization with this designation.

That link is either incorrect or no longer valid.

My mistake I should have known that I
would not be able to answer the question without further discussion.
Okay so I am in the computer industry and I must retract what I stated before. Though, we were one of the first NPHC’s with a site set up, .com was not the only extension available, .org and .net were available but at the time they were not widely used. And so I believe the powers that be in our corporate office decided to just use what was the norm at the time, but as my Soror DG eloquently implied I can't
speak on it with certainty, but we are definitely a nonprofit ORG.
Questions??? Comments .....

Soror,
I think that we were NOT definite in our original posts regarding .com and .org.
I know I began by saying that "from my understanding..." And you came behind me and said that "that was your understanding..."
So, I think that if we were incorrect or correct in our thinking, that we did not come out and say FOR SURE that what we had previously been told was the TRUTH!
So, we still DO NOT have an OFFICIAL response as to why we use .com and not .org.
So, I will not retract what I said, until we get word from Chicago stating something else...
Really, Soror, there was NO NEED for you to retract what you had previously said...

Hello all! I am a Sister friend but I have also found that the official homepage for kappa alpha psi also ends in .com Whether or not it always has I do not know but since they have a new website it ends in .com I really can't imagine it making that much of a difference though. Just my 2 cents.
