A 'bid' is an invitation to join a specific chapter. At the end of Recruitment week you will sign a card listing your choices for membership (ie - you would accept an invitation for membership from these groups). You can list up to 3 choices. Your choices are matched up with the choices of the sorority. On Bid Day you will receive an envelope with an invitation to join a specific chapter. You sign the card, then join your new sisters for a day of fun activities.

Not all sororities have houses. Some have no housing at all, others have suites or lodges that they use for meetings, small social gatherings and ritual events. And I can safely say that sorority life is NOTHING like what you see in the movies. Most members work in addition to being full time students and active on campus. There will be rich girls in every chapter, but there will be poor girls, athletes, computer nerds, beauty queens, plain janes, etc. Sorority life is very diverse and it is what you make of it. Don't believe the rumors and stereotypes...judge for yourself, impartially.

If you are a freshman, I would recommend that you not pledge any sorority until your second year. You don't really get to know anybody during rush, they all try to look good. They may not be the group that you want to be with, after you pledge, and then you will have difficulty getting out of the situation. Get to know the girls on campus, first. THen you can make a more intelligent decision. You may even decide to do your own thing and that you don't need to join one at all-read Hank Nuwer's book first-Wrongs of Passage, before becoming involved with any group-for your own good.

Question sorority life

What does it mean to "bid"? Do all sororities have a house that every sister lives in or do y'all just live in dorms on campus?

Also, is it just like on the movies and stuff where all the girls in the sororities buy the most expensive outfits and are made of money?

Any replies would be really helpful! Thanks-a-bunch

Now wait a minute, you're trying to tell me y'all don't have naked pillow fights? DAMN, you just ruined image of sororities!

Sorry to blast the image out of you skull. We didn't even have a permanent meeting room, let alone a house!

Popstardiva,

Don't let this idiot scare you off.

If you pledge a a group and decide it's not for you, you can depledge before you are initiated. (This is NPC groups, I'm not sure about the BGLO policy) Waiting to rush is not always advisable - type in "freshman" and do a search of these threads for advice on that.

Furthermore, as far as not being able to "do your own thing", I became MORE independent and true to myself after I joined a sorority, because I had a bunch of sisters backing me up who liked me for me and who I knew would stick by me. This person (Hank Nuwer's agent perhaps?) obviously likes reinforcing ridiculous stereotypes.

Check the Greek life or student life office at your school and they can give you info about housing and such. Good luck!

33girl,

Thanks so much. I searched "freshmen" and it helped me a lot.

Thanks again
