big/lil history

I was just wondering what our founders did for big/lil if anything. Or if the tradition started later on, when did it start and where?

I would doubt that there was a formal big/little system. Early chapters were quite small by our modern standards (remember there were only 12 in our first chapter). The system of pledging started much later when colleges would not permit first semester students to join a sorority. In the days of our founding, when a woman was interested in joining, she would get to know the members (like current COB), and if it was mutually decided that she would be a good member, she was initiated. I could see there being a mentorship with older members but I don't know when the terms "big/little" started. I will, however, refer the question to the Pi Phi archivist.
