OHHHH, NOOO!
Our school is the most hateful when it comes to Greeks. When we try to do something, everybody looks at us like we walked off a strange planet. The professors forbid us. The deans all want us to fail. The bookstore won't honor our book vouchers or buy back our books at a decent price(wait, that's all students). The cafeteria people won't serve us(okay, i'm exaggerating here).
(in my best Southern Baptist, fire and brimestone minister voice)
Greeks are all 'full-time drug-dealers, practicing the religion of promiscuity and alcoholism'.
You would think we were the worst sinners when some of us are pretty good kids. However, I think things will turn around because the PIKEs have pretty much honorary membered half of the men faculty. . .and our new chancellor of Student Affairs is a Greek alum. So, we're crossing our fingers.

AggieSigmaNu
I am SO hoping that the number of people posting on those threads is small.
Aggies already have a reputation state- (nation?) wide as backward, ignorant, hateful idiots. We both know that the average Aggie doesn't fit that stereotype, but the idiots in those posts do nothing to help.
I can honestly say, BU does not have the same degree of antithesis toward the Greek system.
Hang in there, buddy. If/when initiation day comes, I'll stand shoulder-to-shoulder w/ any Aggie Greek any day.

Wow that Galaxy High guy sure seems like a tough guy; I hope he never comes to Houston and steals our beer. I have heard stories about how Anti-Greek A&M is but I really can’t relate. At U of H the only people with school spirit and regards for traditions are the Greeks; were finally getting Greek Row so I hope it gives our system a much needed boost.

Re: Texas A&M- Most Anti Greek School in the Country
The threads are kind of funny...in that they are ripping on Greeks & how they are the bane of the university...but if I recall correctly, with one exception, virtually all of A&M's bad press that I have read in the last 6-12 months has found its source in the dorms or the corps itself. Hmmm...yeah, Greeks are going to lead to the downfall of all school traditions & pride.

well adduncan,
This isn't meant to be a flame, because i appreciate your sympathy on the anti-Greek threads. While i agree about the reputation of being backwards, i.e. Aggie jokes, i wouldn't say that we're known as ignorant, hateful idiots. I mean, i know the anti-Greeks i showed y'all are pretty outrageous, but remember, they're popping off at the mouth partly in due to the anonyminity of the net.
Honestly, i'm just interested what else you're basing this reputation on?

OK, just so you, I, and the rest of the planet reading this thread is clear: I DO NOT BELIEVE THE STEREOTYPE, OK???
The reputation also comes from news reports about charges brought against the Corps, and sometimes A&M in general regarding racial bias. I'm also basing it on the opinions of some of my own coworkers who claim to have first-hand knowledge from being there.
That's it. It isn't coming from me. All I said was, the BELIEF IS OUT THERE BUT I DO NOT SHARE IT.
Let's hope the passersby on this thread understand that point real clear before they fire off a PM.

Mindless drivel from misinformed minds.
For those who don't know, a quick course in 'Aggie 101' (Kitso -- or any other Aggie -- please correct me if I'm wrong... even though I may be a Sooner, but we share a burning hatred of that den of teasippers over at t.u. in Austin! (At least during football season) ) Bonfire is a hallowed tradition at A & M, especially when the Aggies play those teasippers in Austin. That's after we give the Sips a good thrashing in the Cotton Bowl so A & M can finish 'em off!
A gigantic bonfire was built and burned the night before the big game. Tragically, in 1998 the bonfire collapsed while it was being built, killing about a half dozen students. The school officially no longer sanctions the Bonfire, though die-hard alumni keep the tradition going, even if off school property.

Oh man come on I have lived in Texas my entire life I know about the stack; I was just curious why they were trying to lay blame on Greeks.

Sorry 'bout that... explaining to the non-Texans here about the tradition.
I guess there are some people out there who will place the blame on anything just to see if they can provoke a reaction.

My school (the University of Wisconsin) is very anti-Greek as well. Ask pretty much anyone who's not in the Greek system and they'll have something nasty to say about the fraternity boys and sorority girls. Even people with Greek friends often still hold stereotypical views of Greeks. Sometimes, when I respond that I'm a member of a sorority, I've had people tell me things like, "Well, you're different, you're not like the rest of them, and why did you do that in the first place anyway? You're so much better than that."
There are digs at Greeks in the student newspapers and stuff all the time. Even my friends like teasing me about it. You basically have to get used to it; that's just the student culture here. It's been like that for a long time.

OU, you did pretty well.
Bonfire started in 1909 as a symbol of our "burning desire to beat the hell outta t.u." It was built and burned every year after that prior to our game against Texas, 'cept for 1963 when it was dismantled after the Kennedy assassination.
On November 18, 1999 at 2:20 am the stack fell, killing 12 and injuring 30+. The stack, which traditionally reached heights of 60+ feet, was at about 55 when this happened.
Since then, not a Bonfire has burned on the A&M campus. Understandably to some<die hard Aggies> this is pretty tough to swallow. The "Frats killed Bonfire" is a throw away statement made to upset fraternity men. Noone wants to be known as the people that took our beloved Bonfire away.
whew.
adduncan,
ok. i'm down with ya.

Maybe it's because I live in the South, but the reputation of A&M
is nothing but stellar. Everyone knows their requirements are more stringent than many other Southern schools, and the success stories of the graduates are so numerous that parents respect a student who graduates with a degree from A&M.
I really was unaware that anyone actually bought into the Aggie jokes and considered them reflective of the students. Sometimes I think it more a resentment of the "good ole boy" syndrom. Aggies help Aggies, just like UT, or LSU graduates-fierce loyalties.
No different than Sigs helping Sigs or any other fraternal connection.
I too have heard that Greeks take a lot of heat. My niece was a Theta there. She did seem to indicate students were much harder on the fraternities than the sororities.
