I have a planning problem

Hi everyone,

I am the new social chair for my sorority. I would like to plan a mixer with a certain fraternity and the fraternity would like to have a mixer with us. I am friends with alot of the guys and I really want to have a mixer with them. The problem is the advisor for my sorority doesn't think the guys have a good reputation and will not sign any paper work to register the mixer. I know this what she did last semester. And alot of the girls don't want to party with them they just want to party with the same frat they always hang with. Also, my sorority's numbers are down so we would have to have a 3 way mixer with them and another sorority. They have like 70+ brothers.

I was thinking about going to her office for office hours and talking to her about that because she may have changed her mind since last semester and the guy's have improved their rep slightly (not much a girl got raped last semester by one of the brothers). Does this sound like a good idea? If anyone have some advice or insight into this situation, I am listening.

Thanks

Wow... !! paper work for a mixer ??!! all of that is foreign to me !! since our school doesn't support greek life.... ummm... at all we usually have to have mixers at rented places or people's apartments close to campus.. which works because none of the orgs here are THAT HUGE ( I think that biggest is close to 40) but I would suggest that you talk to the sisters and see if they want to do it, if they don't then... they're not going to come and it's not worth your time and effort to try and convince the advisor or who ever has to sign to do it. I understand your wanting to try and have your sister hood branch out and hang with other frats... but if they aren't willing there's not much you can do and it is a lot of work to plan a mixer if no one is going to show up for it.

Since mixers aren't mandatory, and it sounds like a lot of the girls don't want to go, I would not schedule it. If you do plan it and no one shows up it will make your sorority look REALLY bad.

It sounds like a lot of the sisters don't feel comfy around the brothers - maybe ask them to come with you sometime when you are just hanging out at the fraternity or introduce them at the bars and such. I know it is totally annoying when people want to party with the same old, same old, but it's a lot worse to plan a mixer and not have enough sisters there.

I think that if the girls don't want to go, don't plan it. Spend more time trying to convince them. If you just plan the mixer b/c you want one it will probably only breed harsh feelings.
