sisterhood stuff

I thought we could use this thread to post Phi Mu stuff... you know, the little sayings you see on sisters' profiles, the poems sisters post in houses, things like that.

an awesome sister at UW-O sent me this one :

Phi Mu... it's not a clique. It's not a crew. It's not your girls back home. It's not a social crutch or the result of some complex or the answers to all your insecurities. It's not someone to eat lunch with because they don't even have to be there all the time. It's "I got your back, no matter what." It's family. It's respect. It's love. It's eternal sisterhood.

here's a poem, but a lot of sororities have it (including Theta, KD, and AGD, as far as I know) so it'd probably be tough to find the original writer.

MARRY A PHI MU

When my son first left for college,
His dad gave him plenty advice on life..
“You can date each and every Sigma,” he said,
“But bring home a Phi Mu for a wife.”

“You can party with the Tri-delts,
And you can take out an Alpha Phi true.
But when it is time to marry,
You’ve got to be sure to find a Phi Mu.”

“The Chi-O's can come to your parties,
And Kappa Delts are great for a date,
But never ever forget, son –
You'll want a Phi Mu for your mate.”

“We want you to enjoy your college years.
And give all the girls a spin.
But never buy a ring unless
the Phi Mu letters are on her pin.”

“We want the best for you, my son
a girl who’s gentle, sweet, and true
and that, of course, is why you’ll want
to find a sister of Phi Mu.”

“During your years of college,
You'll go from one girl to another.
But take the advice of your smiling dad,
And bring home a Phi Mu like your mother!”

okay. Really I just had all this Phi Mu stuff and wanted to get it out there.

ALL I NEED TO KNOW IN LIFE I LEARNED IN PHI MU

LOVE

Be able to keep a secret, and practice hard

Own at least one white dress. And if you own one white dress, own at least one pair of flesh-colored panties. White just doesn’t work.

Don't be afraid to lead

Don't be afraid to let others take the lead

Never underestimate the importance of social grace

Having is not important, sharing what you have is

A good handshake always has a strong grip

Always say thank you

If you don't mean it, don’t say it.

Stop and smell the rose-colored carnations

Be independent in thought

Value other's thoughts

HONOR

Keep a scrapbook and remember your camera

For everything you take, find something to give back

Even the treasurer has to pay her dues

Remember names

Know how to delegate

Help bring society together with good deeds

Respect is earned – constantly

Be able to say good things about yourself

Be able to say good things about your sisters

Never skip your just dessert

Come out of your shell

A true Phi Mu never has a harsh word to say in public about a sister

TRUTH

Every girl looks good in pink

When you find a good Creed, stick with it

Always let your Adviser put her two cents in. Sometimes they’re worth a whole piggy bank.

Just because your voice doesn't sing, doesn't mean your heart can't

If you meet with a closed door, give it a good knock. If it doesn’t open, give the secret knock. If it still doesn’t open, well, your sisters aren’t in there.

Be on time or else be prepared to wait in the hall

Trust your sisters

When it's time to go, take your memories and leave not a sigh
Every Phi Mu knows, "We'll Never Say Good-bye."

this I sent out over our listserve, just because I though it was cool (and I loved the quote):

NUSHU -- a little-known southern Chinese language, perhaps the only language just for women. Often written on silk screens, one of its popular sayings is
"Beside a well, one does not thirst. Beside a sister, one does not despair."

The words "nu shu" literally means "Woman's Writing" in Chinese. As the name implies, Nushu is a writing system created and used exclusively by women in a remote part of China. Traditional Chinese culture is male-centered and forbids girls from any kind of formal education, so Nushu was developed in secrecy over hundred of years in the Jiangyong county of Hunan province.

Some Nushu characters are taken from Chinese, while others appear to be invented, but all are rendered in a style much more cursive than written Chinese. In addition, the characters are "thinner" than Chinese characters, which tends to be square-shaped. Also, like Chinese, Nushu is written from top to bottom in columns, and the columns are written from right to left.

I really like this thread!

There's no place like HOME... with the "O and M" of home in the shape of a Phi and Mu, also used as "welcome HOME"

I don't have any good stories or long poems, but people should add more! they are all so cute.

from an old thread

A Phi Mu knows how to open her hand and capture your heart.
A Phi Mu knows the value of her word and bond.
A Phi Mu appreciates loyalty and honors her commitments.
A Phi Mu understands the duty implied in a pledge and is devoted to her vow.
A Phi Mu protects the secrets of her sisters.
A Phi Mu always buys pink.
A Phi Mu follows her Creed and stands behind her handshake.
A Phi Mu always shoots for the stars.
A Phi Mu cherishes her badge and appreciates the beauty of pink carnations.
A Phi Mu shares her hopes, her dreams, and her secrets with those she loves the most.
A Phi Mu is patient and understanding.
A Phi Mu is honorable and involved.
A Phi Mu inspires those around her to strive to be their absolute best.
A Phi Mu is sweet, soft, and charming.
A Phi Mu comforts, and encourages.
A Phi Mu opens her heart for others and then locks the door.
A Phi Mu helps those who cannot help themselves.
A Phi Mu lives not just for herself but also for all around her.
A Phi Mu makes one better for knowing her.
A Phi Mu is, above all, a lady that is honorable, courteous, tender. She is a woman to be loved and respected, just as she loves and respects those around her. She is loyal, understanding, and patient.

Laughter precedes her; happiness walks with her; peace follows behind her. She means everything to me - she is my Phi Mu Girls.

I found this one on a website of another phi mu chapter.

Once in a while you find someone
who's a friend, right from the start.

You can tell by a smile, a word, a touch.
It's a feeling you have in your heart.
You can tell by the warm glow inside you
whenever that somebody's near.

It's a wonderful, comfortable feeling
like you've known them for many a year.
You can tell by the way they will
brighten even the gloomiest day,
and how they stand by you after others
have gone their own way.

You can tell by the way they listen
to your troubles big and small and then
say that they understand you, so you don't
feel so bad after all.

Yes, once in a while a friendship is made
that will last a whole life through.
It really does happen, just once in a while.
It happened to me in Phi Mu.

Sara
