5,
You're exactly right. That is a case of really bad journalism.

Of course this is a campus newspaper -- a student reporter. Cut the guy (or girl) some slack. There's not always a lot to report and these types of topics are evergreen.
Hell, it's an opportunity to write a letter to the editor and emphasize that your organization does not haze. Turn the situation around and practice some good PR.

It's interesting that they have a quote from a male pledge of Alpha Epsilon PHI, a sorority. Good job fact checking.

ARRRGH!! I am really annoyed with this sort of stuff right now as the Clarion newspaper was talking about the homecoming court reps from Sigma PHI (I realize this is a real fraternity, but we only have Sigma Pi) and Delta PI Epsilon. On top of that, I was reading an article from the Slippery Rock paper where the reporter talked about sorority "sealing."
Come on people, this is college, not junior high. I realize you might hate Greeks with every fiber of your being, but when you don't double check and make stupid mistakes, it makes YOU (and the school) look stupid.
That article reminded me of the articles that get run every year about drinking and such...repeating the same thing students have heard a gazillion times and have completely tuned out. Why not fill that space with plans from student orgs for the year, an interview with a professor or student, or a feature about the surrounding town?

Sorry, I generally have some defense of journalists because I worked in TV for so many years.
This is what we call a non-story. It has no place in a newspaper, student or other.

They have got to be kidding. If that qualifies as journalism, I am going to start running my own paper:
In Chicago today, no pianos fell from a high floor onto anyone's head.
According to the mayor, pianos falling from great heights onto people's heads is a serious problem.
To deal with the seriousness of the issue, we have set up a hotline, 87-piano that you can call if you think you are the victim of a piano falling on your head.
We know it's happening out there, even though it's not happening and we have received no reports.

This reminds me of my favourite scene in John Cleese's How to Irritate People.
Pilot over intercom: Attention passengers, there is absolutely no reason to be alarmed.
