Exclamation Black Clubs

Commentary from a local paper - - -

In response to the question of whether or not predominently "black" clubs are unfairly targeted by local authorities I would
like to introduce a couple of points for consideration. Firstly, in my experience in the triangle area only "black" clubs grace
their patrons with a physical body search. What's up with that? Why would I choose to go somewhere in which those
measures are deemed necessary? So I can be around other black people? I don't get frisked at my church that's
predominently black. I don't get frisked anywhere else for that matter. What is it about our culture that has allowed this
mentality to become the norm? Why is it that white clubs don't find it necessary to frisk their patrons? Are white people
less likely to carry weapons or start violence? American history tells us that that is not so. So what up, Black people? Why
is it so important that we be surrounded by people who look like us? After 400 years of sweat, toil, and heartache in this
country one would think that we would sieze the opportunity to go beyond the boundry of our blackness. Why do we still
segregate ourselves? Are we afraid of white people? Do we not like them because they're white? Do we think we're better
than them? I don't go to "black" clubs. I don't go to "white" clubs. I go to whatever place has the cheapest drinks, the best
DJs, and the finest ladies. And that's my two cents. Ciao!

I respect the views as outlined by the writer and can appreciate the idealistic views. However, I don't live in a society that has disregard for the color of skin. I live in a society that continues to make good and bad judgments as a result of race, creed, color and sexual preference. The concept of "Black or White" clubs in my opinion has very little to with its patrons but more to do with the type of music played by the club. If clubs are considered "Black" because it plays R&B then I prefer "Black" clubs.

Well I consider a black club to be a club that plays strictly hip hop and R &B. I just think black folx like to be around their own because they're more comfortable. I don't think it has anything to do with thinking we're better than whites, or anything of that nature. I know when I want cheap drinks and 10 cent wings...I go to a different environment. But when I want to meet (or just be around) yound professional BLACK men, you might see me at First Fridays! I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I grew up around mostly blacks for the first half of my life, then aroung mostly whites for the latter half....and quite frankly, regardless of how steoreotypical this may sound, we do party differently. We react different to music, we dance differently, we dress differently, we even drink different types of drinks! (this is based on my experience) And there's nothing wrong with that.

Now as for the violence and being pat down.... this (along with the fact that I'm not paying ridiculous cover charges) is one of the reasons why I don't really go out to clubs anymore. I can only speak of my experiences, and at white clubs, there are ALWAYS altercations,....I mean with the drinking and testosterone, how can there not be..... but they usually just get broken up and that's that... AND the police don't hassle the folx that much as long as they settle down. However, in black clubs, from my experience, sometimes there may be a weapon involved, or somebody may call his boys, and they come to the club to finish what was started.....AND the police always over-react...hey it's sad, but this is just what i've seen......

Two Words.. White Flight

As far as violence, it will happen wherever it is permitted to occur. If people get slapped up in the club and can then return next week like nothing happened, then you foster the anything goes mentality. There are always great places to go for drinks, atmosphere and safety. But, if you like the little whole in the wall that's always getting shot up, can you really complain?

That's interesting. I've been to "white" or "latino" clubs that play strictly hip hop and r&b....

Me too...matter of fact I am going to one tonight.

I think the logic the original writer used was flawed. Why should Blacks have to go to "white clubs"? What is really the big deal about being self-segregated?

I think StraightBOS hit the nail on the head.
