Question Greeks at Jesuit Schools (2)

Hi. So now that I know there are a few of you on GC, I have a question/favor.

We at Creighton are one of the last Greek systems to use a guarenteed bid system (just for the women. if they follow all the rules and attend all the parties, they are guarenteed a bid from a sorority). We are trying to get rid of it and are looking for the support. How do your PHC's follow the Jesuit tenants esp "care for the individual" without a guarenteed bid?

Also, could you have your PHC presidents email me with more info? Thanks so much.

My Two Cents

I'm an alum from Rockhurst, which has a much smaller Greek System than Creighton does. Nevertheless, I am shocked that the sororities have a guaranteed bid system there. Even at such a bass-ackwards school at Rockhurst, such a system would never fly.

As far as upholding the Jesuit philosophy, etc. with regards to bidding, my opinion is this. Those girls who are the "least wanted" by the sororities ultimately will get a bid from the "least favorable" sorority on campus. Maybe for some, they want or would take bids from this group, but my guess is that alot would drop out of rush.

At Rockhurst, we had a chapter of Alpha Xi Delta that this very thing happened to. For two years, they bid tons of girls only to have none of them sign with any group. I'm not sure how this would contribute to the Jesuit mission. But again, my little story is only conjecture for how things work at Creighton.

KEPike,

On most campuses there are several women each year who do not receive bids from ANY chapter. As stagebear says, at Creighton, they have rematched those women to chapters in the past to prevent women from being rejected from the system.

Guarenteed bidding actually contributes to the death of chapters, like you illustrated in your post. If a chapter is constantly pledging the women who no one else wants, they wind up dying themselves, b/c no one going through rush will want to be a part of them. It is not that chapter's responsibility to pledge these women -- each chapter should be able to chose who to and not to pledge.
