Penn State also said Monday that Sigma Chi is not a university-recognized organization. The university said unrecognized fraternities and sororities are those that, “by their own choice,” or by action taken by the university, have decided to operate without approval or recognition from Penn State. The university said those groups are not subject to the same oversight and regulations as officially recognized organizations, and that this can pose significant threats to the health and safety of members and jeopardize the broader fraternity and sorority system.
In July 2024, reporting indicated the president of Sigma Chi told 6 News that the university’s Greek safety plan had gone too far, and that 17 fraternities were facing some type of suspension — reflecting an ongoing debate over how much control universities should have over fraternities.
In March 2025, 6 News reported that Sigma Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha formed the State College Interfraternity Council and were operating independently outside of the university. The council described itself as a new approach to Greek life governance focused on safety and community engagement.
Also in March 2025, Penn State publicly warned against the council, referring to it as a “rogue independent council” and saying its formation is “deeply concerning.”
So, the national headquarters of the fraternities recognize these organizations but PSU doesn’t?
