It's ten o'clock- do you know where your purse is?

I sure don't.

I hostessed tonight and when I was through, I went downstairs to eat dinner. I was all set up with my food and everything at teh bar- btw, I work in a really nice restaurant and we NEVER have a bar crowd. Tonight there were 3 businessmen the whole night at the bar... it's very quiet down there. So I'm eating, and I run upstairs to go to the bathroom. I come back and my purse is gone. Turns out that some really shady guy cme in, sat at my end of the bar for about 5 seconds, acted weird, like he was high on something, and left with my purse. The valet saw him carrying it but figured he was a customer carrying his wife's bag or something like that. We looked everywhere in a 3-block radius, but no purse.

Made a police report and all that... but this guy made away with a) 6 credit cards, including my checkcard, b) my California driver's license- god knows how I'll get that replaced, since I live in DC, c) my car registration and insurance ( I had taken it out of the glove box to get a temporary parking permit earlier today), d) my Social Security card, e) my paycheck for $600, f) a whopping five dollars in cash, and g) my car keys, apartment keys, and building keys.

Now comes the scary part. I came home and got my spare car key and went back to get my car- i usually park about 6 blocks from my restaurant, on a residential side street. When i got to my car, the trunk was wide open. WIIIIDDDDE open. There was nothing in it to begin with, and all the other doors were locked, stereo intact, everything's there. I got really freaked out b/c this person now has the keys to my car and has obviously been to it already- god knows why he didn't steal it. Anyways, what REALLY freaks me out is that he has my address- and teh master key to the apartment building as well as my apartment keys. I told the front desk security (which is an oxymoron) and the locks are being changed first thing tomorrow morning, but I'm really scared to stay in my apartment tonight. With the building's master key, he can get in by a number of side doors- he doesn't have to get past security. It just scares me b/c he obviously took the time to track down my car with Cali plates a good half-mile away, ina secluded spot... what if he comes to my house?

Sorry for the long post. Tonight just really freaked me out.

Anyone ever been in a similar situation?

My sister's purse was stolen containing the keys to our apartment and the car. A week or two later the car was stolen.

I have some suggestions. I think that you ought to change the locks to your apartment and your car first thing. Also notify the social security administration, the DMV, and your bank and credit card companies. Since this creep knows your address and soc sec #, you should contact the credit agencies in order to avoid identity theft. He could open credit cards in your name with your info, charge thousands of dollars and ruin your credit.

I'm sorry that this happened to you. It is such a pain in the neck to replace all those documents.

I would stay at a friend's house tonight...definitely call all your credit cards, etc. tonight. I had lost my gas card once (I must have dropped it), and the first illegal charge occurred less than 5 minutes after the time printed on the last receipt I had for that card (I keep my gas receipts). They start fast, so you have to report it now. The SS card is a biggie too. You can get your paycheck cancelled and reissued...

I am sorry that happened to you. I know that it must be really stressful.
