I thought I had posted this, but the search feature says I didn't, so...

I absolutely hate the word "invite" when used instead of "invitation"! It sounds so low class and ugly. When I was in chapter, we would only issue an invite to someone we were forced to issue an invitation to. *shudder*

As a person of a certain age group, I can say that "Wee Willie Webber" who was on the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia in the 1960's and hosted the Breakfast Time show, used copacetic on every show to indicate that things were fine in Philly, especially with respect to the 76ers who were doing well at the time.

I have never heard anyone else use this word.

"low-key" (not in the typical usage, but the way it's being used now days)

Example:

Well, she's going out with him now, but lowkey I still like him and it bugs me.

(and I usually see it spelled as one word).

ETA another one:

PROLLY

As in, "I'm prolly gonna get a D on that test."

I can't STAND when people actually think the word is "prolly" instead of "probably"! Makes me think of "prolly want a cracker?"

I guess my "word" pet peeves are more like words and phrases.

"Oh no you/he/she/ didn't" --stupid.

I can't stand when "plethora" is mispronounced as "ple-THOR-a." This is new, it didn't used to bother me.

"You can use grant #A_____ for that purchase"

"Best Regards",

FirstName LastName

It seems unnecessary to me and too formal for that particular type of communication.

I hear/read it from people in the fiber arts community, and it annoys me to no end.

OK. I thought it was something that everyone said.

Like "We're feeling all fiddly since we moved, but twee will get used to it"

Or something.

Sorry...I was really reaching with that one lol

The only time I've ever heard twee being used was from a friend in Dublin, who thought that Maeve Binchey's writings were too twee. I heard it as Two, Three, and thought she had a speak impediment at first!
