I just celebrated my 50 years of membership in my sorority. So my rush or recruitment as it is called now was a loooong time ago!
I decided I wanted to pledge a sorority because that was where the action was on my campus. More about involvement in campus organizations than anything else. And also the desire to be in a group of like-minded young women.
Mine was definitely a values-based rush. As rush proceeded I saw a great deal of diversity among the members of my sorority, which appealed to me as I could see that each member was selected for her personal qualities. And yet they all had a terrific bond with each other. It didn't hurt that it was the top sorority on campus, but going through rush I saw that was because of the quality of each member and her unique contribution both to Chi Omega as well as to our university. Top grades were also important to me as I was in college to get an education. There were two other groups I could have happily joined and would have been honored to receive a bid to. But I felt that my first choice all along was the best fit for me and I for them as our values and expectations so closely aligned.
But of course this is different for every young woman who participates in rush!
