A good song done bad...
Has anyone else heard the Dolly Parton version of "Stairway to Heaven"? Can someone please explain how this happened? I almost drove into the back of a Smart bus to make the pain go away. IT's HORRID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't heard it yet but I'm sure it will definitely suck. I am not a big Dolly Parton fan...

I haven't heard Stairway, though I have heard Shine. Scary on principle!!! The worst was Sheryl Crowe's Sweet Child O Mine. Though SigmaChiCard has a point with the Madonna mishap.

boooo
Unless they are old standards, remakes in general usually suck.
Beatles remakes are particularly heinous, although I did like Earth Wind & Fire's version of "Got To Get You Into My Life."

Generally, but that is why Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" is the greatest song ever....there' never (to my knowledge) been a horrible version of it (though I'd have to say DMBs is the worst of them)

I agree that the Sweet Child O Mine debacle was horrible. So was her version of Dyer Maker. Maybe she should just stick to her own songs...

Hey! I liked Sheryl's cover of Sweet Child of Mine. It's a pretty song and I'll take her voice over Axl Rose's any day.
The cover I'm hating right now is the new "But you Say I'm Just a Friend" or something like that. I guess Biz Markie actually participated in this new version too! In my opinion they took all the goofiness and fun out of the original with this new version.
While we're on the subject of cover's sometimes they're good when they manage to completely re-invent the song. Annie Lennox did a cover of Bob Marley's "Wait in Vain" for the Serendipity soundtrack. They end up being COMPLETELY different songs but I love both of them.
Anyway, Karen.. That Dolly cover just sounds frightening. I hope I never have to hear it.

ACK! Save me! I hope I never hear it...her voice grates.
On the other hand--what is the best cover ever? I will have to say The Gourds remake of "Gin & Juice." Funny as hell to hear that song done Bluegrass. Of course, I guess only the Texans will know what the heck I'm talking about.
...with my mind on my money & my money on my mind...

OMG! I didn't know that was actually a song! My two Delt Sig friends who play guitar would sing that and I thought they were just making it up! To make it even better they would sit on the porch, drinking 40s of Mickey's Malt Liquor in paper bags. It would keep us entertained all day long!

Only Texans???
It's by the Gourds, but you'll find it falsely listed under virtually every band from Phish to Leftover Salmon. You can't go to many non-rap-playing parties and not hear it....

Okay on that note... Has anyone ever heard of Hayseed Dixie. They do twangy country covers of AC/DC songs. It's too funny!

Heehee-no offense Card! I really had no idea if anyone out there would know what I was talking about (I'm married w/two kids, so the party scene isn't really in my life anymore...*sniff*).
My younger brother who is more "up" on the music scene than I am introduced me to this group (he went to UT & everyone in Austin thinks they know more about the music scene than anyone else in the world!). I'm just glad to have some other folks to laugh about it with...wonder what Snoop Dogg thinks about it.
I will have to look for the Hayseed Dixie stuff...
