The most ghetto place you worked at?

What's the most ghetto place you've worked at? Did you have really ghetto co-workers? Clients? Management? A really ghetto physical environment?

I work at a job that's in the transportation industry. It's hella tacky. My manager greets me, smoking like a chimney. The parking lot is pitch black at night. Some of us women complained about it, so one of our managers brought in a homemade street light! It only works about 20% of the time anyway, and it is not bright. My flashlight is brighter, actually!

I knew we had dogs. Big mean pitbulls! Instead of having security cameras or dogs, we do it the old school way! They are always put up in the side yard, whenever we come in to work, however. Last night before we left, one of them excaped. I did not notice until then, that those dogs are not fenced in. Our depot is fenced, but not the area the dogs hang out when we are present. Instead, there are wooden boards used as a barrier between the people and the dogs!

The co-workers, the co-workers! We have an ex-con. He was employee of the month last month, because of high sales. He brags that he uses the same strategies he did when he was selling dope! Then there's this chick who goes by the name of "Poo Poo!". We have to give her rides home because her ex-gf burned down her car. And there's a guy who looks and sounds just like Young Jeezy! One time, someone asked what the date is and another guy blurted out "Jesus! They are supposed to cut off my phone today!"

And I went into all of this student loan debt, to work at a place like this!!!! Please God let this be over soon, this better be temporary! Fuck me, fuck me with a homemade street light!

I've only worked at nice places, but the most ghetto one in comparison:

Couple years ago, I had a failed startup that got some free office space as part of an incubator program. It was located in the basement of a former sorority house (chapter died in the '80s). It had a funny smell to it, and the fluorescent lights flickered. Also, the table was wobbly and the chairs were missing arms.

Not very ghetto, but compared to a 5yo modern office building and then one with high ceilings/window and coffee-machine to employee ratio of 1:1, that was ghetto.

I worked for a rich guy several years ago who was, I guess you'd call him a developer. He bought old crap hole buildings with the intent of fixing them up, turning them into loft apartments, etc. But this was just as the economy was going seriously south and he was making completely bizarre decisions on a daily basis. The biggest part of my day was dealing with the calls from the banks wanting to get paid. His minimum payment on one of his credit cards was THOUSANDS of dollars. It turned out he had a brain disease and died a couple years after I (blessedly) left his employ. Money stresses me out and seeing someone throw away literally millions of dollars before my very eyes was anxiety inducing, regardless of the fact that it wasn't my money and never would be.

So on one hand he wasn't ghetto at all. This little office of his had original artwork by the dozens and many of them you'd recognize. It was really astounding, his art collection. His family money came from forming a bank which I won't name but I can assure you you've heard of it. And on the other hand, I got to learn what "hard money lending" is, which in my opinion couldn't be more ghetto. He was also mortgaging off his wife's money (I don't know where her family money came from but it was also substantial). I just hope when he died his wife was able to sell his Warhol and a few of the other famous pieces to make ends meet.

And here's what I learned from that time. The REAL money in urban renewal? Parking lots. Tear down that old semi-historic building and put in a parking garage. You'll make a FORTUNE.

I've worked at a "ghetto" place before, ... it was a library in my old hood, that I loathed on a daily basis. No one ever said the word "library", ... it was always "lie-berry". My car was stolen right before my eyes right in front of the building, at 2pm in the afternoon, in broad day-light. I could go on and on, but I can't seem to stop laughing at the original post long enough to even get angry enough to remember my experiences.

The above post reminds me of some incidents at one hospital that employed me which was located in one of the roughest parts of Detroit. Hub-caps were frequently stolen from cars in the parking lot even though the parking lot was no more than 50 yards long and right up next to the building. You could sit in the cafeteria and watch them taking the hub caps during lunch. Security guards had cameras but did nothing. Employees complained to administration and a memo was sent out suggesting that employees leave their hub caps in their trunks while at work. For realz?

About two weeks after that memo came out, my co-workers and I were leaving at the end of the day and the spot where one woman's car used to be was empty, save for some broken glass from her driver's side window. She went directly to the administration office and asked whether she was supposed to leave her whole car in her trunk next time or whether they were going to do something about security around the building. They did nothing. In fact, they ended up closing a year or so after that.

Used to work in transportation industry. The place never had a permanent janitor for over a year, only twice-a week visits for one hour by two guys. Filthy place. Some of us caught impetigo. Good thing we had health insurance. This was during a recession, so I couldn't quit and work elsewhere.

I worked at a Radioshack in one of the poorer parts of OKC. Actually two different ones. We did a great business in selling the same prepaid phones over and over to the same folks.

Waffle House. I NEEDED a job and I wasn't even there a month. The cooks carried guns and the waitresses carried knives. One was pregnant and talked about how she was going to go home and get in the tub and smoke a fat joint. I was accused of stealing because two nights in a row money was missing from the register...only one of the nights, I wasn't on the register. There were only two girls that were on the register both nights. The worst was cleaning up puke in the bathroom after midnight one Saturday night.
