True story.

I'm an introvert. I would never have mastered the art of small talk without Sigma. Or the art of doing conversational damage control when someone has just introduced a taboo topic. Or the art of determining (from 20 feet away) that your friend is having a "ran out of things to talk about" moment with that guy and needs a save, quickly.

I'm generally not a "big party" person, but in my field, schmoozing and small talk and "galas" is part of the routine. So I've had to readjust myself, and I can't tell you how much being in Tau Delta has helped me, and also working in customer service for many years. Because I have to tell you, it is bloody terrifying to just go up and chat to people, but if you have a plan of attack, it is sooo sooo much easier. "Hi, Welcome to TD, I'm Tracey. I see you at the art building a lot, what is your medium?" and "Hi, Welcome to STORE. Do you have any questions about *this product you're holding*? You might also want to look at x because it has y and z, while this one has a and b."

Something someone else told me is to not anticipate people's reactions. Don't put your anxieties on to them. Assume that everyone is open and welcoming to your greetings, and treat them as such.

Working in medicine, the ability to break the ice and make someone feel comfortable in an awkward situation is highly prized. Some people are born with it, but if you're not, the more practice you get in college the better!
