NBC's "Smash"
Has anyone seen, or is planning on watching "Smash?"
I saw an advanced series premier on Hulu last night and though it was very good. Compared to most of TV's current drama offerings it looks even better. What do you all think?
"Smash" will premier February 6th, and is available to watch until then on hulu.com and NBC.com.

I loved it, but I'm a die-hard theatre person.

Meg Hilty is from my hometown =) She's one of my favorite "Glindas" from Wicked.

I'll watch again, but I love Debra Messing.

I was expecting it to be a huge flop and disappointment and I'm happy to say that I was WRONG!
Not a fan of Xtina's "Beautiful" but I loved loved loved the original music so much I'm downloading them from iTunes.

I've decided I don't like the assistant, I'm not sure if it's something abstract that rubs me the wrong way, or him leaking that video. I read a recap of the show that noted Tom telling him Marilyn "was his idea" and speculating that he might be looking for part of the profits in the future. I thought that was interesting.

Guess I'm the only dissenting voice here. I had really high hopes for this show, but I thought everything was overly contrived, clichéd and downright schlocky. It's like they were forcing the Mad Men concept into a musical. I'll give it another chance next week, but if I see another episode dedicated to Katherine McPhee's "ooh, lookit me! I'm a fish out of water from Iowa in the big city now" BS, I'm done.

I found it delightful. I can't wait for the characters to develop over the next few episodes.
Debra Messing is too cute for words & who doesn't love Anjelica Huston?

I loved it and didn't think I would because I don't care for Glee. I was pleasantly surprised.

I didn't care for it either. I might watch one more episode to confirm, but I thought the acting was stilted (is that the right word?) and I didn't like any of the songs either.

I tried to watch it tonight and turned it off after 15 minutes. I just couldn't get into it at all.

I forced myself through the entire episode, hoping it would get better.
They haven't clued us in to the Katherine McPhee's character's background (maybe she's had a lot of training and did theater "back home"), but no savvy, experienced Broadway producers would cast a fresh-off-the-turnip-truck wannabe actress to carry a brand-new musical.
The audition scenes were poorly done, as well. Unless you are a complete newbie, actors don't arrive in full makeup and costume at a first audition. It's acceptable (and smart) to wear something to suggest the character/role you're shooting for, but you want the producers to envision you in THEIR version of the character.
The 10pm booty call was really weird, too. Did Karen really think that it was a good idea? If she had any training, she should know that you don't go to stranger's apartments alone and putting yourself in a vulnerable situation, even if it IS a well-known director. Are we to believe that she (or her boyfriend) didn't know what was up, then suddenly decided to vamp herself up in the bathroom and teach the director a lesson?
The baseball number was also really contrived. The lyrics were really awful, and the dance was tragic. The "producers" wanted to make sure they weren't making fun of Marilyn and her sexuality, but then they put "Marilyn" on top of a dude's shoulders with her crotch in his face.
Just my opinions. I know we're supposed to suspend belief, but those things really bugged me.

LOVED Bernadette Peters on the show last night!!! She's still got it...I have always been a HUGE fan.
Who wants to bet Julia got pregnant from her affair with Michael??? They have not revealed why they were attempting to adopt. Could be unable to conceive, so she wouldn't have been on birth control.....
