It looks like this list was compiled from drug and alcohol violations, and not the percentage of students who might actually use drugs or alcohol.
My alma mater, for example, didn't punish students for alcohol or drugs--just if you committed a real (or campus) crime under the influence. So, the actual violation numbers would probably be extremely low, but that doesn't necessarily reflect actual drug use.

Agree. Reed College isn't on this list. It has a very well known reputation for an active and open drug experimenting community.
I mean read this article
http://www.wweek.com/portland/articl...higher_ed.html
It's from 2008, but little has changed. In fact, there was another heroin overdose last year or the year before. Also, the survey uses information from 2009 so not too far off.
One specific quote to point out.
Quote:
In a 2007 survey, 25 percent of Reed students said they’d used an illegal drug other than marijuana in the past 30 days

Like the Party list, their definition doesn't fit what the rest of us think. Grinnell College, huge drug school? I SERIOUSLY doubt this. Kid takes one bong hit and gets arrested? This sounds much more likely.
Enrollment: 1,688 On-campus drug arrests: 7 - so there's 1 pot party with 7 people at it that gets busted. That makes it the 14th largest drug school in the US?
Also, although I'm not personally a weed fan, I kind of have trouble putting marijuana on a drugs list unless you are also including alcohol. If someone is looking to these lists so they can avoid access to heroin, acid, etc., I don't think this list is helping at all and just promoting FEAR FEAR FEAR.

The surprising thing for me on the list is that how many of the SUNY campuses have lower than 10,000 enrollment. I always guessed that they would have larger numbers. Live and learn.

A good friend, the best man in my wedding is a Reed alumnus. Yes they have a lot of experimentation, but they also have significant substance-free housing, etc. Also, most of that experimentation happens during their Ren-Faire (sp?) and they do observe quite a bit of safety protocols so things can be sort of safe.

I truly, truly hate these lists. I wish people would ignore them.

Kevin, Reed is a unique school with a great academic reputation and if they stuck to that I think we (Portlanders) would be quite proud to have them as a member of our community, but the bolded is wishful thinking on your friend's part.
I'm not sure how long its been since he attended Reed, but it is a small school and they've had 2 heroin deaths in the last 3 years.
I checked Oregonlive.com (the online version of our local paper) and they've written at least 8 articles in the last two years about drug use issues at Reed (granted most were related to the heroin deaths), but when the attorney general stops by your school and tells you to clean it up or you're losing your federal funding - it's bad.

Illinois State is on this list -I'm surprized. It's my favorite state university. So is Miami of Ohio, another school I really like.
