Hi Sadie -

PLEASE remove your identifying information (where you went to school, where your mom went to school). Anyone can access this website, and it will be easy to track you down with the information you've provided. It's always best to leave items like this offline to ensure your safety.

That being said, you have plenty of time before getting to college. Focus on being a high school student (keep your grades up, stay involved, etc).

Read through the "Sorority Recruitment" forum for some general information. You'll know when the time is right to seriously start planning for Greek life.

Good luck.

ETA: Thanks, NP!

I reported this thread to the mods. Even if she took out her identifying information, her username's still there.

Hi Sadie-

That's wonderful that you're interested in joining a sorority. You don't have to decide which one you want to join for a while.

NPC sororities (they are all national, there are 26 of them, but no school has all 26) have a formal recruitment process where you meet women from all the sororities at your school and then visit fewer and fewer each round until you rank your choices, and you are matched with a sorority. You won't decide which sorority you want to join until you are at the end of the recruitment process, and keeping an open mind about all the sororities at your school is best. Check out npcwomen.org

NPHC sororities (historically African-American, also national, there are 4) have a process to join called intake. Interested women do their own research on all the sororities and choose only one to pursue. I am not in an NPHC sorority, so I am less familiar with the process. If NPHC sorority membership interests you, you still won't have to decide which one you want to join until college.

There are other types of social sororities, some cultural, some with a particular academic or professional interest. They may have their own schedule of events to meet interested women.

In the meantime:

-Enjoy high school
-Get the best grades you can
-Get involved and be a leader in your activities
-Participate in service and/or philanthropic projects you are passionate about
-Start networking to find sorority alumnae*

*Start asking women you know if they are sorority alumnae. Depending on where you go to college, having recommendations from alumnae can be a vital foot in the door at competitive recruitments, or just nice to have at less competitive schools. I bet some of your teachers are sorority alumnae! You have 4 years to network. A lot of times posters come to GC saying "My recruitment starts in 2 weeks, I don't have any recs and I don't know any sorority alumnae!" You have all the time in the world.

Good luck to you and don't forget to enjoy high school while you can. It will go so fast.

Another thing we talk about a lot here is conversation skills. Learn to talk to people who are outside your group of friends. First, I believe it will make you more well-liked in your school if you are friendly to the various groups of students, but it will also prepare you for meeting people outside your comfort zone for years to come. I'd say "learn to talk to strangers" but you're still young, and of course you have to be careful about that. How about if I say "learn to talk to strangers who are your own age!"

But first and foremost, enjoy high school, get involved, including leadership roles, keep your grades up, and try not to focus too much on the far-distant future.

I bet almost every one of us oldsters would tell our 15 year old selves to just chill and quit worrying so much! If I were to talk to my 15 year old self, the biggest thing I'd say is to expand my circle of friends. By the end of high school I was so over all of them and didn't have a big enough circle to draw from.
