Computer Experts: Weird Orange Overlay

Yesterday I turned on the computer and a weird orange overlay was covering the whole screen. I went to the user control area and nothing had been changed on color choices. I ran malware checks from 2 different companies--no viruses there. The orange color actually disappeared twice for about 15 minutes each time, then returned with a flash.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Probably your screen or graphics card going. It's much more likely to be a hardware issue and not a virus/software thing.

Agree with WhiteDaisy. How old is your monitor/PC?

Just for grins you can try a disk defrag. I always start with that when my computer starts acting wonky. And then I'd probably head to Best Buy. A whole new computer will probably cost you about the same as a new monitor, or close anyway. If you have a favorite geek in your life and you love your computer, you could always have someone put in a new video card, but see above about cost of a new computer.

Is your monitor separate from the computer as opposed to being built-in like a laptop? If so make sure the cable connecting the display to the computer is secure on both ends. If you have an extra cable, you might want to try that one instead. The cable carries the red-green-blue signal to the monitor and if it is not seated properly you can miss out on one of the colors which can turn everything a strange color. Those cables can also go bad. If you have access to another display I would also try connecting your computer to that display and see if you still have the problem.

This was my first thought as well. Check the cable. If one of the pins is loose, you will get a weird color that comes and goes.
