Who reads rec letters?

I didn't realize how controversial this question was! Sorry! Forget I asked.

Well since recs are usually sent to one member, usually a reference or rec chair, you know at least one person reads them all.

Otherwise.... does it matter? If you have recs being written for you, have no fear that there is someone collecting them and reading them, even though it is summer.

@southern1, we REALLY do not discuss membership selection on here, and you are teetering. It's info that a PNM really has no business knowing.

Yes. I agree with AnotherKD. Please southern1, don't give this type of information out. Also, to say that some GLOs pour over the recs but, that your GLO sees it as only a formality is a broad generalization that you may want to stay away from. While my sorority at my university did not necessarily care about recs, I can't say the same for my sorority at say University of Alabama, Indiana, Ole Miss, etc. You really should stay away from making statements like that. I know you are new so, many of us realize you probably didn't mean to start anything but, you want to be careful what kind of advice you post on here. That's all.

While someone may have found LadyLonghorn's statement mean (I'm guessing the OP may say something like that), it was really spot on. It really is nothing the OP should be concerned about, for the most part.

Granted southern1 kinda included a disclaimer that her experience is from a long time ago.... but it doesn't help the OP with her question now. Which really, is a non-issue for her because it's out of her hands.

Was she concerned about non-members reading them? I know that's been something people brought up when the address listed to send them to was the student center instead of the house.

In this age of security and identity theft, I think it's a fair question. I also think it's fair to say they get read by some or all members of the chapter, depending on how much importance is put on the recs, how many they get, etc. If your question is regarding security, there shouldn't be anything on the form that would be harmful should it find its way outside of the chapter. If it's for anything beyond security, sorry, you're outta luck. I don't think many of the other sororities do what we do and burn them on a pyre while dancing naked in a circle. Oh, did I let that slip? HA!

In short, try to stop worrying about the details and focus on the big picture. I had an unhealthy obsession with wondering what they were SAYING about me in these all night slug-fests that I'd heard about.

My campus (as well as the chapter I advise) doesn't do recs at all. I had never even heard of such a thing until I joined GC after pledging, so I opened this thread thinking "huh, I'm curious, too!" Didn't realize how intense the topic is, I suppose.

Same. I am actually quite curious, though. Maybe I'll find out someday.

Well, the initial post asked about who reads them, especially if they arrive over the summer when, according to the OP, nobody would be around. I had the same reaction as IL and LL: PNMs shouldn't be thinking about the mechanics of what the sororities do but concentrate on putting their own best foot forward.

This thread is upsetting me.

Someone BETTER read the ones I write. They are freaking masterpieces, worthy of publication. Seriously. I'm even thinking of publishing them in a book for sale, for others to copy. Every rec I write is just absolutely the best, better than the one before. I spend hours and hours writing them. Hours and hours and hours. Heck, I'd put my rec writing skills up against any other rec writer on GC. Hands down, I know I'd be judged as the winner. End of contest.

Well. That's settled. On to the next molehill.

Um, AzTheta, do you need some coffee? Or maybe a hug?
