Getting Cut from a Sorority

If you are cut from a sorority during rush or you decide to cut a sorority, what do you do while your rush group is visiting that house? Do you just wait outside the entire time or what?

And if you don't have a full schedule for whatever reason, you will be told where to wait or what to do about the vacant spot in your schedule. At some schools you may just show up later or leave earlier. Your recruitment counselor will let you know.

I think you're probably getting yourself all worried over stuff that is a long time from now AND outside of your control. Not having a full schedule during recruitment at any point after the first round is very common. Your recruitment counselors will advise you what to do, so try to just relax and roll with it. You may feel like the biggest loser on the planet and the ONLY one of all your friends who isn't being fought over, but trust me, cuts happen and if you don't have a full schedule you absolutely won't be alone.

As you will have read 100 times on these threads, it only takes one. If you get cut from your favorite chapters, take a moment to re-assess your situation, raise your head high and go back to your remaining chapters like it's a new day and look for the good in your new options. Every single chapter on your campus will have virtues, and deserves consideration.

Good luck!

You're NOT going to have to stand outside the house alone while all the rest of your group is in there. People are not going to walk by and point at you and laugh at you. Is that what you were worried about?

You'll more than likely go and sit (with the many other girls who don't have a party in that slot) in the student center or a nearby classroom. You'll have extra time to freshen up, comb your hair, etc etc while all the girls with a full schedule have no time to do so and look like crap.

Ditto what everyone else has said. I just want to emphasize again that 1. It is TOTALLY NORMAL not to have a full schedule, and 2. you aren't cutting any groups!!!

I also want to add, from experience, that wherever they have you hang out during your free parties can be a really tense place. There may be girls who are crying because they are really upset about their schedules, and their will probably be a LOT of tent talk and trash talking. Please stay away from all of that negative energy! Bring a book/ipod if you can, or do whatever you like to distract yourself. You need to go into your next party with a clear head and a positive attitude no matter what!

Though you have the same recruitment counselor all through recruitment, your rush group will change slightly because some girls will go back to houses you aren't going to and vice versa. So perhaps when you go to a party another girl wasn't invited to, she will go to a party you weren't invited to. The numbers of girls invited to each sorority will be taken into account by Panhellenic and they will determine the appropriate number of girls per party per round so no one is "sitting around forever". Keep in mind though, if you don't have a full schedule, you might be asked to come later, leave early, or maybe wait through a party. But it's not a big deal, so don't worry.

If you go to a pretty good size school with a large Greek life you can almost expect to have breaks regardless if you have a full schedule or not. I know for Arkansas recruitment this year every round is two days except for pref and we have 10-15 parties most days. We only have 8 sororities so even on the first day you could have breaks because there could be up to 30 parties in the first 2 days and you'd only visit the 8 houses once. I'm not sure how other campuses work, but the girls' schedules are completely random. Some groups will see all houses in one day and have the next off, or you could have half and half, or completely random like 7 one day and 1 the next.

I go to a small school, and our rho gamma groups are split by what dorm we live in. Our system was set up to have three rounds- philanthropy day (all 5 houses), sisterhood day (max of 4 houses) and pref night (max of 2 houses). I know quite a few women, especially on sisterhood day, who didn't have a full schedule. A lot of us chilled out in our dorm common room, took a little extra time on hair and make-up, and just tried to relax as much as possible. I found it useful, it meant I didn't have to run across campus in heels in the snow in 10 minutes or get squished into a cold, overcrowded van. Hope this helps, and good luck with recruitment!
