Good and bad news
In the SPE magazine I read this morning, and in the new TKE magazine this afternoon, I saw articles/pages devoted to "The consequences of our actions".
The contents were short articles about problem chapters (hazing, booze, vandalism), specifically naming the chapters/campuses, what the guys did, and what happened.
In the six TKE chapters listed, 5 of the six were closed, and members were expelled in two cases. In one case, some new pledges (who were caught vandalizing) were de-pledged too.
This is certainly something new for TKE, and I know in the past dead/dying/suspended chapters quietly disappeared without mention.
I think the new tool of publicizing bad neews is an improvement.
Nothing makes good news more believable, than some occasional bad news.

I totally agree with you. Unfortunately, to get the attention of those chapters who condone and do those activities that fit in the "Lose your charter"types of B.S., publicizing closed chapters is a good thing.
I think publishing it in an "internal" type of forum like THE TEKE is totally appropriate.
Naming names is right on target as well. Nothing like telling the story about the infamous "annonomyous (sp?) chapter being shut down.
The most annoying thing is that those fraters who do that type of B.S. are ultamitely making a decision on behalf of all of the TKE alumni from their home chapter not to mention Tekes everywhere. They are choosing their chapters destiny even though lots of work was done prior to their membership to make TKE successful.

I am sorry to but in on the conversation but I am really concern about the TKE's at my University..They had a huge problem about maybe 2 years ago with vandalism and hazing horribly..They have since become the weakest chapter on campus but the guys who have stayed with the chapter have been trying each year to be noticed and I think with some outside help they could truely turn their chapter around for the better..I know TKE is very well known and strong on other campuses, and I would like to see this group of guys get back on their feet, but how should they go about doing that, in order for their rush to be stronger and such?

They just need a motivational speaker of some sorts like Buckwheat or any motivated rush coach. Plus if they got in trouble for doing that stuff it might take awhile for people on campus to forget about it so their "rep" is not as bad.

I know for a fact that bad influences and decisions within the chapter can affect it's reputation at the chapter. The individuals within the fraternity need to get their asses in gear and focus on more things than just partying and hazing. While I DO agree with hazing to a certain extent, vandalism and hardcore practices to the pledges only discourage people from joining in the future. I know at my chapter, in particular, things were going bad for years. We went from #1 at our school to last in a matter of less than a year. Nearly a year ago we lost our house and rush suffered greatly. Fortunately, we had guys in our chapter that gave a damn. Us losing our house could have been the best thing for our chapter because it forced us to strive for something. We had an open rush, with help from nationals, and in one semester (not a year, two years, but ONE SEMESTER!!) we changed our entire chapter around. We got an even better house than we had before (and currently the best that our chapter has ever had), better organizational skills, better leaders, quality pledges and recruitment (we were even recognized by the campus for that), and we attained #1 in grades. All of this in one semester. It can be done, but it takes alot of heart and dedication.
