I am a huge traveler (16 countries, all in the past six years), and it can get expensive. However, it's not remotely impossible to do on a cheap budget. My mother knows a woman who travels 4+ times a year on a teacher's salary, and has been to something like 60 countries. You just have to be smart.

http://www.kayak.com is a fantastic way to comparison shop flights. I've used it many times and have always been pleased by the fares I've been able to get. Also, know that sometimes the most expensive flight is from the US to the other continent, and once you are there it can be much cheaper. Case in point: Europe. An absurdly expensive continent in many ways, but I've done both London to Dublin and Madrid to Barcelona for a little over $40 round trip. I kid you not. Baggage can be more expensive though depending on what you are bringing.

Trains and buses in many countries can also be very cheap. I've taken essentially school buses with chickens running around in Central America for dirt cheap...the most pleasant thing in the world? No, but I was able to access some amazingly deserted beach towns because of it, and for very little money.

Accommodation can be cheaper as well. Hostels are often an absolute steal compared to hotels, and I feel you meet more people. Hotels can be brought down by huge amounts using sites like hotel.com. I've gotten some ridiculously nice hotels for peanuts using that site. And if all else fails, there is always http://www.couchsurfing.org/. This site lets you stay for free in a home stay during your vacation. I haven't tried it yet (but likely will), but my friends have done it and raved. Obviously be safe...look for somebody with a ton of positive reviews.

Last but not least, experiment a little. Paris and London, etc., are fantastic cities, but incredibly expensive and tourist oriented. There are some amazing parts of the world that are infinitely less expensive but just as worth seeing. I've done a ton in Africa, Central America and South America (I'm getting to Asia next!) and found it just as amazing as a European cosmopolitan city (and in many cases, more interesting and vibrant). $10 beach side lobster dinners in Nicaragua? Fifty cent beers in Kenya? I mean, how can you say no? If you still want to do a major country in Europe, pick a different region. For example, the Alsace Lorraine area of France is stunningly beautiful and relaxed, and although it's not exactly budget it is far cheaper than Paris.

Good luck, and have fun traveling!

Oh, I forgot too, you can travel and get paid for it if you pass a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course. http://www.i-to-i.com has an incredible selection of programs. I've booked two trips through them and they are fantastic with organization and helping you out.

When I worked at Club Med I worked with a couple guys who just traveled around and got jobs. They worked with us until Carnaval season and then went to the Dominican Republic for awhile. They worked on the loading docks at the New York Times before that. And I have a friend (an Aussie) who traveled the US and Mexico for a year and a half or something, and they got odd jobs (working illegally of course) to get enough money to get them to the next place. She has amazing stories to tell of her adventures in America. And they drove from San Francisco to Central America and back, something Americans would never do.

It's an interesting way to see the world, but it's definitely manual labor kind of stuff. I personally would go to work on a cruise ship. The hours are crazy, but you do get to see the world and make friends from everywhere.

It can be done. A lot of people just aren't able to give up a lot of their luxuries to just do it. Get out of debt and don't buy into the debtors lifestyle (having the biggest, shiniest things) it can be done.

Though you can't live like that forever, folks will look at you funny.

For this reason, try pricing flights into a few different cities. Last year, over Xmas, it was cheaper to fly into Frankfurt than anywhere else, so we started our trip there and took trains around.

glitzprincess08, I'm definitely in the same boat. Well, I also don't have time lately besides the whole money issue.

I have found that day trips really help if you have the itch to travel. Less expensive and you're just at the right level of exhausted by the end of the day. Granted, I am in LA so there is a fair share of places to explore, but try a theme day of going with a certain culture (Little Armenia, in my case), climate (try skiing and surfing in the same day---again, this is a very LA thing sorry), or just see how far you can drive and find a local town and their best kept secret diner. I've found countless adventures without a passport, but I agree that nothing can replace a trip to Europe. DTDAlum's advice is fantastic.

Random and of note: apparently Freemasons, if in an emergency, can stay at another Freemason's home, and they can be found in pretty much any city. It's a very, very interesting community.
