Old or New School Name?
The chapter of your fraternity or sorority used to exist at Sample State College. It went inactive and the physical charter was lost. The school name has changed from Sample State College to Sample State University. When the chapter is rechartered, should the redone copy of the charter say Sample State College or Sample State University?

My opinion:
New people, new charter, new school name on the charter.
However,
When referring to the history of chapter, I would say "Kappa Beta Chapter, chartered at Sample State College (now Sample State University)"
That's pretty much what we do in NPHC-land. In fact, at UDC it's a sense of pride to say that your chapter was chartered at Miner Teachers' College. Of the Divine 9, I think only the Alphas and Iotas were first chartered at UDC. The rest were chartered when it was the teachers college.

I can answer for G Phi B as far as how alumnae are listed - I am a Gamma Chi who pledged at Southwest Texas State University. The university changed the name to Texas State University (don't get me started on how I feel about THAT . . . ). I am now offically an alumna of Gamma Chi (Texas State). As to the charter, you get a new charter upon re-chartering, so it would have the new name and the new charter members.

Same with AOII...I pledged at Northeast Louisiana University which is now University of Louisiana at Monroe. I don't get to claim NLU anymore. We beat Bama a few years ago, though, so I'm over it!

I would assume that the new charter would say the new school's name b/c you're kind of starting a "new" chapter. That's a brand new history starting at a 'brand new' school.
My chapter's charter still says "Lawrence Institute of Technology" and I'm glad. I think all of the fraternity chapters have an LIT charter. I wouldn't want us to get a new one with LTU, but that's a different situation.
So, same thing as everyone else said, basically. If we were to close and then recharter, I'd want it to be stated as Sen said it, though: Kappa Beta Chapter, chartered at Sample State College (now Sample State University)

My organization is very new, so we haven't had this come up yet.
The only school that's gone through a change (Southwest Texas ---> Texas State) still has the old information on their charter, but uses the new name on everything else (website, etc).

I agree with previous posters.
The name of the school on the charter would only be changed if the chapter was recolonized.

His example included this part - the original charter got lost along the way.
If the original charter can be found, I wouldn't see why a new one would be made, regardless of recolonization or school name change.
But if you can't find the thing after looking everywhere, then yeah, I guess you can make up a new one with the new school name. (Although this should never ever ever happen.)

This could be one of those things that varies from GLO to GLO, with some doing a new charter, some reissuing the old one and maybe even some adding the names of recolonizers to the original charter.
And I have no clue how my fraternity would handle this.

A lot of the people I know who went to Southwest Texas still refer to it as such (even though it's Texas State now), since nearly everyone in the state knows about the name change.
I'm sure if you list the college, you can reference the university during the "tell me about yourself" portion of the interview.

On applications that have little room, I just put NLU since it's on my diploma. On my CV, since there is as much room as I want, I put NLU (now Univ of La at Monroe.)
BTW...it's a huge trend to get rid of the directional names of schools, ie. Southwest Texas, Northeast Louisiana. Northwestern State University and Southeastern Louisiana University in Louisiana both resisted the change, and we (NLU alums) are just a little jealous since we fought it and lost.

This is an interesting question for Delta Chi since we name our chapters after the host institution.
In terms of the university on the charter I think it would probably change if the recolonizing group were given a new charter.
Chapter name would be a more interesting issue. There are a few variables:
- With Sample State College/University the chapter name wouldn't matter because it would still be the Sample State Chapter - the "college" or "university" is not usually in the chapter name - i.e. I belong to the George Mason Chapter not the George Mason University Chapter.
- If the name of the university changed I suppose the recolonizing group would get to choose whether or not they want to use the old or new name. An example, though slightly imperfect since the chapter was not recolonized, is our Tri-State Chapter which was founded at Tri-State University in Indiana. The university has since changed its name to Trine University, but the chapter has chosen to remain the Tri-State Chapter.

. . . or because we grew up with Southwest Texas and it's hard to switch - kinda like those of us who refer to "recruitment" as "rush". I liked being a SWTexan - don't know what they are now - tissues (TXSU?)

Yea, it's still weird saying Texas State. Whenever I type or talk about it, I start out with "SW...wait, what is it again? Oh yea, Texas State."
