Kappa Sigma Closes U of Georgia Chapter (Hazing, Substance Abuse)

Kevin and LaneSig:

Possibly for your lists? Kappa Sigma has "shut down" its chapter at the U of Georgia. Reportedly (see second article listed) this was a 110-year-old chapter. See articles linked below:

Excerpts from ^:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Kappa Sigma fraternity has shut down its University of Georgia chapter after an investigation.

Mic Wilson, executive director of the fraternity's . . . governing body, announced the closing. A letter sent to the chapter last week says an investigation found that members had violated the fraternity's rules on hazing and substance abuse. . . .

The chapter's fraternity house will be off limits to fraternity members next semester. University officials are lining up housing for fraternity members.

A longer article with more details is at:

ETA: The UGA student paper's site has a similar story on the closure:

Let's see.

1. Clemson
2. Vandy
3. Tennessee
4. So. Miss.
5. Ole Miss.
6. Arizona
7. Oklahoma
8. Alabama
9. Georgia

The undergrads don't believe it but our national is not going to put up with the BS that happens all too often. All these chapters were strong and well known. Many were single letter chapters as well. Most, but not all, have recolonized. But why go through the crap if you can just obey the rules.

Guess I am just too old to understand.

The investigation has been re-opened, according to the campus paper. An article is accompanied by some documents; see:

http://www.redandblack.com/2011/01/2...nvestigations/

. . . Though handwritten notes from the OSC [Office of Student Conduct] investigation are vague and unclear, they reveal a connection between the allegations and Tyler Bishop, a former pledge. The notes state Bishop didn’t fit in with the fraternity and subsequently dropped. They also mention push-ups and a blind fold.

Bishop’s father, Thomas P. Bishop, is a former Worthy Grand Master of Kappa Sigma and serves as the fraternity’s endowment fund secretary. He was a Kappa Sigma at Mercer University, where his son is now a student . . .
This investigation [at Georgia] follows the expulsion of the University’s Kappa Sigma chapter after the national organization found it in violation of the Kappa Sigma Code of Conduct.

After the national chapter expelled the fraternity and revoked its charter, Dean of Students Bill McDonald asked the national chapter for information about the case, as the University needed to investigate as well. . . .
