Otis Redding: 43 years ago today

Today, it is 43 years since Otis Redding and 4 of the 6 members of The Bar-Kays (Redding's backup band yet an awesome band in their own right) were killed in a plane crash. Redding's manager and the pilot were also killed in the crash. A fifth member of The Bar-Kays, Ben Cauley, survived the crash and a sixth member, James Alexander, was on another plane because Redding's plane was full. (These are the two members who revived The Bar-Kays and James Alexander is Jazzy Pha's father.)

Those of us who are fans of Redding and The Bar-Kays have heard about this tragic day for years; and TVOne did a special on Redding and The Bar-Kays.

Redding was 26 and The Bar-Kay members were 18 (Jimmy King, Phalon Jones, and Carl Cunningham) and 19 (Ronnie Caldwell).

Redding recorded "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay," the song that made him more of a household name, 3 days before this tragic accident. It is said that he considered the song unfinished and whistled the tune in the recording so that he could record actual lyrics later. Those whistles actually placed the finishing touches on that great song.

Rest in peace, Redding, King, Jones, and Cunningham. Still jammin'!

You learn something new everyday. I had no idea that The Bar-Kays were his backup band.

DrPhil, you take me back to my past on a fairly regular basis. Otis Redding was gone far too soon; what kind of impact and career would he have had, if he continued on the path he was on? I can only imagine.

For me, the ultimate Otis Redding song is "I've Been Loving You Too Long". A masterpiece.

That song always gives me chills.

He died around the time that Blacks were making some big movies in the music industry and R&B was becoming more popular.

He actually sounded (and looked, sometimes) older than he was.

Yes, it sure does. The lyrics are incredible and his delivery is unbelievable.

It was a very exciting time on many different levels. To me, it's all wrapped up in the music and the musicians and the relationships they forged.

You can see The Bar-Kays in the background. This was recorded December 9 and the plane crash was the next day.

As for "Try a Little Tenderness," this song has been sung by damn near everyone since 1933 but this is one of my fav versions. My least fav is Chris Brown's in This Christmas. LOL.

They still play "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" at the Terrace at UW-Madison in tribute to him.

The Bar-Kays became popular in their own right during the early 80's a few years after the death of Otis and most of the original band members. I think their original bassist was the only surviving member who didn't ride on the plane.

Yup. "Freakshow" was my jam.

Also, I remember that Otis' sons formed a group called The Reddings at about the same time.

The Bar-Kays and The Reddings had some good songs and have a lot of youtube videos.
