background check for prospective members
I am thinking about seeking membership into a sorority and I came across something I am curious about. I noticed that a background check has to be done on the applicants which includes dmv records, criminal records and a credit report. I have a perfect record and am not concerned about that end, but I'm just curious to know what a sorority is looking for in somebody's credit report? Are they trying to figure out if you have a lot of debt or are making payments on time?

I cannot speak for other sororities, but my organization does not perform background or credit checks. NPC ladies correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of the NPCs do this, either.
Is this an NPHC sorority you're interested in?

It doesn't say anywhere in the application? Whenever I submit something that requires a credit check, there's a section that says "we're going to get information from the credit bureaus to determine _______."
You could also ask a member of the organization.

What kind of answer are you looking for by coming here with this question?
You said you aren't concerned with what a background check on you would find; and I don't know which sorority you're talking about. But, Google "sorority background check" and click on the first result for an idea of how to research the answer to your question.

Yes, it is a NPHC sorority. I am trying to figure out what they hold against a person as far as a credit report is concerned because I have no tickets and have never been in trouble with the law in any way, but I do have some credit. Just two credit cards with low limits, $530 together at most. I always make my payments on time as well, even if it is only the minimum. I guess I'm just curious about why a sorority would want to look at a prosepective member's credit report?

You need to directly ask a member of that sorority that you know personally.

From an informed sources yes they do perform credit checks at the National Ofiice. So if you have bad credit try working on it now. I personally think a credit check is not going to tell what type of member you are going to be.
