Lady Gaga rallies for 'don't ask, don't tell' repeal in Maine

By the CNN Wire Staff
September 20, 2010 7:29 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- Declaring that "Equality is the prime rib of America," pop star Lady Gaga urged Maine's two U.S. senators to help break a Republican filibuster on legislation that includes a repeal of the military's ban on openly homosexual service members.
"My name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. I am an American citizen," the singer told a Portland, Maine, rally organized by the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. She urged Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, both Republicans, to support the repeal of the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" rule and share "the greatest cut of meat that my country has to offer" with gays and lesbians in the military.

As much as I hate Gaga, I do admire her for trying to use her fame for something good like this.

I like Lady Gaga but am tired of her regardless of what she's talking about.

It's obvious I don't pay enough attention to celebrities' personal lives because I had no idea she was gay before right now.

She's a lesbian? Where'd you get that from? (was it in the article?)

I don't think she's gay. I think she is just aware of her demographic.

She made a comment about being gay in the speech. I then did some research and apparently she stated in a RS article that Poker Face was about her bisexuality.

That's news to me. I've heard her flip-flop about it in interviews.

Flip-flop = unintentional pun

Apparently she confirmed it on 20/20 as well when interviewed by Walters. Like I said though, all news to me.

I wonder if she made a donation to the Service Members Legal Defense network, and I'd also like her to not just target straight service members who target gay service members. There are plenty of gay service members and politicians who are prejudiced as well, Larry Craig I'm looking under the stall door at you. Anyone who is being prejudiced or bigoted needs to be dealt with.

I wish President Obama had half the backbone that Lady Gaga has when it comes to facing the DADT issue. I sincerely hope that those attending the rally contacted the offices of Senators Snowe and Collins to ask the two women to vote against the proposed fillibuster. I fear that the former is afraid that she will be targeted in 2012.
