Thanks, everyone, for the kind words. Clark had his pledge induction Sunday night. Also, there were a couple of open spaces in the Sigma Chi dorm, so Clark will be moving in the coming weekend.

So, that's pretty much it for this thread. I will update when initiation rolls around. And, I will be writing another fraternity recruitment thread in 3 years when Clark's brother goes through. Since there were a couple of Kid Flash fans who read this, I'll call him Wally.

A members aunt did that during our 08 initiation. She surprised her literally AT the door. During part of it, the aunt was crying when she was speaking. It was beautiful.

You have no idea how happy and proud I am. I promise that I did not push him to join. He did send me this message: "When it came down to it, I really liked the members, I liked the organization, and I knew that if they were good enough for my uncle, they're good enough for me."

So I am seriously 1 proud, happy uncle and member of Sigma Chi.

That's awesome news. Congrats to Clark.

The group that has colonized at the campus is Alpha Gamma Rho. Clark has spent a lot of summers on our family's farm. He really enjoys being there. He and I (and I should have known better) were under the impression that you have to be majoring or minoring in some sort of Agricultural degree, so we thought he wasn't eligible. Only after talking to the Ag teacher on my campus (an AGR alumn), did I find out that not all AGR chapters require the Ag department major.

But, that's okay, because Clark really liked Sigma Chi from the outset. Of course, hearing about it all his life from his uncle didn't hurt.

Well, being a Pike little sister I am glad to see they were up there but so happy for you that he is joining your fraternity!! Couldn't have had a better result...knew it all along

Update

Unfortunately, this semester Clark fell victim to the "I'm-in-college-on-my-own-lets-have-fun-and-I'm-sure-my-classes-and-grades-will-take-care-of-themselves" Syndrome.

He is not going to be initiated this semester, but will re-pledge next semester. I'm disappointed for him, not in him. He was worried about that, but I assured him that I understood and supported him. (GCers with kids, how difficult is it to bite back the "I told you so" sometimes?)

I think he is going to take school and the fraternity more seriously next semester. He knows he screwed up and this is a huge wake-up call. So, hopefully at the end of spring semester I will have a more successful ending.

He's learned a very valuable lesson, and he learned it early on. I imagine you're right about next semester, and I'm glad he's getting a second chance with Sigma Chi.

Lane, I learned the same exact lesson. My first quarter GPA was a 1.5

for the same exact reasons (too much partying, and I never had to study in high school and thought it would be the same in college). After intervention from Theta, and threats from my mom ("If you're going to flunk out of college, you can do that at home at the community college!"), I pulled a 3.0 the next term and was fine after that. He'll do it!

Same here.

1st Semester: 2.1 GPA - Getting to explain to your father whyyou made a "D" in Art Appreciation = Priceless.

2nd Semester: 3.2 GPA - Getting to explain to your father why you couldn't have done the same thing 1st semester = Priceless.

Good for him for getting his grades back up! I know how it feels because I, too, fell prey to the same syndrome. But then the semester I pledged AEPhi was my best semester (as far as grades) in my undergrad years. A good fraternity/sorority will have that effect, making you want to be better than you were.

I just read this thread for the first time today, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! And I hope he is continuing to pursue Sigma Chi! My boyfriend of 3 years, the man I plan to marry, is a Sig. They're a group of great men, with an INCREDIBLE brotherhood. Every chapter I've ever encountered has displayed it.
