Best sports conference in the NCAA's?
Hey all you sports fans..
What is the best overall conference in the NCAA's? Big East? Big 10? Big XII? SEC? ACC? Big West? The answer is... None of those!! The Pac-10 will always reign supreme over ALL conferences in terms of the best in the country. Let me hear it!! Tell me why YOUR conference is the best!! I always cheer for a Pac-10 team when it's going up against another conference, even though I might HATE that school (like USC). What about you guys? Do you always root for your conference?

Well, I kind of like the Mid American Conference -- or the Yankee Conference -- or the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Why?
Because they play sports for the enjoyment of the game -- not to show off for pro scouts or get big TV contracts.
I directed live TV sports broadasts for years, and among my very favorites were the service academy games, because with very few exceptions (although those were often notable), the academy athletes had no real shot at the pros. So they played for their teams and their schools -- not for personal benefit.
To me, the smaller conferences and the service schools really give some meaning to the term "scholar athlete."

I don't go to a Big XII school (mine's NAIA) I live between two of them though, Oklahoma and OK St. Although I grew up a Sooner fan as my parents are both alums of Oklahoma.
If you start looking at teams that could be championship caliber teams and are consistantly good. Well you have more overall talent in the Big XII than anywhere else (in football OR basketball)
Take Football, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado or Nebraska (if they get a good QB) could ALL be contenders for a championship. Kansas State and Texas A&M are also great programs. I'd be willing to say no conference has this much collective talent in their ranks.
Basketball? Big XII teams made up 1/2 of the Elite 8 and 1/2 of the final 4. No other conference even came close! SEC was out of the picture by the end of the Elite 8.
It's really hard to argue though which is better, SEC or Big XII. They definitely both have good arguements.

You all say that your conference is the best...but show some proof! What conference, top to bottom, can compete with any other conference in ALL sports? I definitely think that the PAC-10 is the only one that can. Sure, the ACC has a few good basketball schools, but what else do you have? The SEC occasionally has Florida or Tennessee in football, and only Kentucky in basketball, and then what? The Big 10...we don't EVEN need to mention the Big 10-what have they brought recently? The Big XII has football, with OU and Texas and Nebraska, and basketball this year with OU and Kansas, but what else? Only the PAC-10 has it all-in every sport. I know a lot of you may think that the only sports that matter are football and basketball, but when you look at the schools that have won the most NCAA championships, the top three come from the PAC-10 (UCLA, Stanford, and USC). I think that the only sport the PAC-10 doesn't do well in is ice hockey-but that's okay, because we make up for it with water polo, tennis, golf and baseball. And for the most part, we actually graduate our student athletes!

EXACTLY!! Pac-10 rules!! (With the exception of one LA team that resides in Westwood... )
Did you all know that...
"Pac-10 members have claimed an incredible 59 NCAA team titles over the past seven seasons, for an average of more than eight championships per academic year.
"Even more impressive is the breadth of the Pac-10's success, as those 59 team titles over the past seven seasons have come in 21 different men's and women's sports. The Pac-10 has now led the nation in NCAA Championships 36 of the last 41 years and finished second four times.
"Spanning nearly a century of outstanding athletics achievement, the Pac-10 has captured 311 NCAA titles (238 men's, 73 women's), far outdistancing the runner-up Big Ten Conference's 185 titles.
"The Conference's reputation is further proven in the annual Sears Directors' Cup competition, the prestigious award that honors the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. Stanford continued its remarkable run in the 2000-01 season, winning its seventh consecutive Sears Directors' Cup. In the 2000-01 final standings, five of the Top 10, and seven of the top 14 Division I programs, were Pac-10 members.
"For its outstanding efforts in football and men's basketball in 2000-01, the Pac-10 became just the second conference in history to have three teams ranked in the Top 10 in the final Associated Press Football Poll and three teams reach the 'Elite Eight' of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in the same season." -- From the Pac 10 site.
Though I must disagree with you, phikappapsiman, over the Trojans...USC rocks. We are the second most winningest NCAA team in terms of collegiate championships...I forget who's the number one team though. (It's not UCLA...UCLA's after USC, haha.)
I don't understand how come there is all that "East Coast" influence. With the exceptions of Duke, Maryland, I honestly don't get all the hype surrounding the ACC. And as for the SEC, what is that all about? They are powerhouses in football, that's for sure...but I'm sure most Pac-10 teams could beat most any SEC team on any given day in any other sport.
I get so bored if a matchup is not Pac-10 or at least interesting (e.g., the UCLA-Kansas b-ball game...too bad the wrong team won!).
I must say though that after the Pac 10, I like the Big Ten.

Who has the better confrerence doesn't matter as much team wise as who has the best individuals. It is hard to call pac-10, for example, a good confrerence if say their best player is from the east coast. Doesn't happen always but many schools recruit for players all over the nation. Individual schools and conferences are merely "places to play" in my opinion.
And I still agree with what delt alum says, those small time confrerences like the Wcc or the Colonial conference play for the love of the game without the hope of being "noticed".

Well then, obviously the Pac 10 does a damn good job of recruiting for their conference. Of course every conference recruits. Many West Coast HS players also go to the East Coast...a lot are in the Big Ten who come from the Bay Area.

I agree with that sentiment Ex-greek, but why does it have to be either/or? I mean, I'm sure that a lot of athletes in "big " conferences love the game also, and play not because they are looking to go pro, but maybe because they want to play with and agsinst the best competition around. That's why the NCAA basketball tournament is so much fun...you have schools like Maryland and Duke and Kansas, but you also have your Gonzagas and Richmonds and Sienas-and some of those these guys DO get noticed (John Stockton and Casey Calvary and others). And not just in basketball either. I mean, didn't Jay Fiedler of the Miami Dolphins go to Dartmouth? That's hardly a football "powerhouse". I personally love watching WCC basketball on TV here in the Bay Area-I actually go to a few USF games.
