It will greatly depend on the school, campus culture, and particular chapters, but it is possible, yes. I don't know many current collegians on my campus, but when I was active there were several Canadian women in sororities on campus, and a couple of guys (one from Russia and I'm not sure where the other was from, I just know he was here on a student visa) in fraternities that were not American.

well being from australia, i'd think you would be a lot more interesting to talk to/possibly more desirable than an American who matches you like gpa/extracurricular wise! I mean, personally, I'd have fun talking about the different cultures and what it's like in Australia, etc and end up having great conversation which is always a plus!

When/if you talk about being from Australia, though, be conscious of trying not to sound "superior" (for lack of a better word). I only say this because I've met some foreign students who would always say "well back in ____, we did it like this" and "at home, we had this," but in a really pretentious tone and it KILLED me. It's okay to compare, but don't make it sound like bring here is a million times worse than being at home ya know? Hope that all made sense haha

*disclaimer: I'm not in a sorority, I'm rushing this fall, so I have no idea if that's how the girls will actually see you. It's just my personal opinion
