info on joining APO

Greetings, I'm looking for info about Alpha Phi Omega. I will be a Junior at Appalachian State University this fall, and I would like to know about rush and initiation for this fraternity. I've heard that APO is a service fraternity, and I'm interested in finding out more about it because I want to get involved with the community and University around me. I would like to know about what life is like being a brother in Alpha Phi Omega, and any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks and God bless!!

APO rush varies from campus to campus, on my campus rush is three day period that consists of a social event, service project, and a leadership project to show what APO is all about. By, the third day if you're still interested you can join, we do not and cannot cut. At initiation, the meaning behind our coat of arms is revealed, also more background history. NO HAZING!

BTW, I noticed that you are also interested in joining an IFC (social) fraternity. If you didn't know, you can be both an APO and in a IFC fraternity at the same time. Membership with the two does not conflict with each other.

The chapter at Appalachian State is Tau Beta and their website is http://www.acs.appstate.edu/~apo/.

The chapter at your school is Tau Beta. You should go to apo.org and then you can find the homepage for Tau Beta chapter. You'll have to speak to someone there about their rush and pledging because everyone does things differently. Good luck!

Since we're a brand new chapter, we only rushed once and had one pledge class.

We did rush two weeks after the sememster started.
Our pledge period lasted about 2 1/2 months.

I am an alumnae of Beta Rho chapter at the University of Arkansas, my question is...does being a APO ALUM will it conflict with a NPC rules. I am joining a NPC as an alum initate and i wondered if that conflicts with the NPC....

Hi Laura!

Ryan Smith, a Brother from Beta Rho, came to Georgetown for Grad school a few years back and was fairly active with Mu Alpha Chapter. Maybe you know him? Probably pledged in the early to mid nineties?

Anyway, to my knowledge, being an APO alum will NOT conflict with the NPC on any level, undergraduate or alumnae chapters.

In fact, I don't think membership in APO conflicts with ANYTHING. . . someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Noper. I was once in a NPC sorority and in APO at the same time. Membership in APO does not conflict with any other.

Hello. My name is Beth. I have a friend that is interested in joining a fraternity, but not necessarily a social fraternity. I told him what I knew about your organization... And he seemed interested. (btw... I'm interested also...)

Anyways, to get to my point...

We need some more information.

Obviously, there is not an Alpha Phi Omega on our campus. Do you know if your organization is open to expansion? Or who I would contact for that information?

Are there requirements for PNM's?

For those of you in a social GLO, how do you balance the two? And how is it "legal" to be in both a social GLO and Alpha Phi Omega??

I looked up the national website, but I didn't see the answer to these questions there. Maybe I just didn't look far enough... But I'd really appreciate any information you have!

No.

Because APO as a National Organization is not a member of any inter-fraternity organization (all the social greeks are), there is no issue with being a member of a social GLO and us.

You may only join one social GLO. You may join as many non-social GLO as you wish (I include 'professional', 'recognition', and service GLO in this group).

Remember, almost all of APO founders were members of social GLO, and when they founded APO they did not want their membership in APO to impact their membership in their social fraternity.

Contact our Director of Chapter Services at the National Office. Her name is Judy Mitchell. Contact information is on the National website. She can help you start an Interest Group that can lead to a Petitioning Group and a new chapter at your school. Our National Program Director for Membership & Extension has been doing a lot of work to make the process easier.

As to being in APO & a social GLO, it is totally 'legal' to be in both. You may only join one social GLO, but as many non-social as you wish. Since APO is not a member of any intra-fraternity council and not a social GLO, there is no issue.

As to balancing the two, well we have many Brothers who are members of social GLO (fraternities & sororities). Being a part of both is little different then being part of more then one club/org. You spend time with both. If there is a conflict where you have to decide to attend one group's event over another, most won't be upset if you miss an event, so long as it doesn't seem like one group has precidence over another.

For instance, in addition to being involved with APO, I am heavily involved in Scouting. Sometimes there is a conflict and I have to decide to do a fraternity event or a scouting event. But I make the decision based on the events. I don't say that scouting is more important then the fraternity or vice versa.
